Camels take part in lacrosse, track and field competitions

Connecticut College competed in a pair of lacrosse games on Saturday as well as a track and field game. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Lacrosse: Conn College 9, Hamilton 8

Senior midfielder Drew Green (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) intercepted a pass at midfield with 20 seconds left on his ride and the improving Connecticut College Camels were able to hold off a talented Hamilton squad for a 9-8 NESCAC victory on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Saturday.

The Camels have won four out of their last five games, improving their mark to 6-5 with 3-4 record in the NESCAC. Hamilton had its five-game winning streak halted Saturday as the visitors slipped to 6-5 with a 3-5 record in conference action.

"I am very proud of the guys and their effort today," Connecticut College Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Dave Cornell extolled. "We stuck to the game plan and played hard against a very well coached team. Every win in the NESCAC is so tough to get. Now our focus shifts to Amherst Tuesday."

Connecticut College freshman Briggs Barton (Rye, N.Y.) scored three goals to lead the offensive attack for the Camels. Juniors Andrew Freedman (Sudbury, Mass.) and John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) both contributed with two goals and an assist for the hosts.

Sophomore Tyler Corcoran (Simsbury, Conn.) sandwiched a goal around two assists while junior midfielder Stephen Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist for the winning side.

Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won 15-of-20 face-offs to go along with a game-high 10 ground balls. Senior net-minder Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) made 12 saves in the triumph.

Hamilton College senior attackman Jonathan Leanos (Long Valley, N.J.) erupted with four goals and two assists to lead the visitors in the setback. Henry Burchenal (Summit, N.J.) chipped in with two scores for the Continentals.

Mike Fiacco (Fayetteville, N.Y.) corralled four ground balls for the visitors. Senior net-minder Max Vaickus (Hingham, Mass.) stopped nine shots between the pipes.

Connecticut College held a 27-to-23 advantage in ground balls, while the Continentals enjoyed a 38-to-27 edge in shots.

The Camels took a 2-1 lead after one. Freedman scored twice in the final minute of the half and Connecticut College carried a 6-2 advantage into the break.

Hamilton trimmed the lead to 6¬-4 when Luke Sadoff (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter.

But when Corcoran assisted Lyons for a deep shot from the top of the box with 2:24 remaining, the Camels had regained their four goal advantage at 8-4.

However, Leanos ended the third quarter with a goal that provided the visitors some momentum and made it an 8-5 contest as the team's headed into the final quarter of play.

Hamilton made a major push in the fourth quarter, out-shooting the Camels 13-to-3 in the frame. With 7:55 remaining, Leanos scored his fourth goal of the contest on an assisting feed from Paul Armideo (Homer, N.Y.) to trim the Camel lead to 9-8.

Hamilton had a golden opportunity with the ball and a chance to tie the game with less than a minute to play.

But Green was able to step into a passing lane to force the turnover with 20 seconds left. The Camels were able to hold on for the 9-8 victory.

Hamilton visits Williams College this Tuesday night for a 6 p.m. game in Williamstown, Mass. The Camels will host Amherst College Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. game in New London.

Women's Lacrosse: Hamilton 19, Conn College 12

Katie D'Antonio '14 tied a career high with five goals and added two assists to finish with a career-best seven points as nationally ranked No. 18 Hamilton College defeated Connecticut College 19-12 in a NESCAC game at Hamilton's Steuben Field on April 14.

The Continentals (6-6 overall, 4-4 NESCAC) extended their win streak to three games. The 19 goals are the most for Hamilton since April 20, 2010, when the Continentals cruised to a 19-3 victory against Utica College.

Rachel Friedman '13 scored four goals and won five draw controls for Hamilton. Friedman is tied for fourth place on the program's all-time list with 140 career goals. Liz Rave '10 also scored 140 from 2007 to 2010.

Libby Schultz '12 chipped in two goals and three assists for the Continentals. Schultz started the week ranked second in the NESCAC in assists and now has 24.

Ashley Allen '12, Hannah Hoar '13 and Emily Brodsky '14 scored two goals each for Hamilton. Sara Berthiaume '15 tallied her first goal for the Continentals, Madison Beres '15 posted one goal and four draw controls and Martha Plack '14 was credited with an assist.

Josie Jones '12 scooped up four ground balls and Julia Beaty '13 caused three turnovers for Hamilton. Dewi Caswell '14 started in goal and made two saves in the first half, and Kari Koga '15 relieved Caswell and stopped two shots in the second half.

Katelyn Driscoll '12 paced the Connecticut College offense with three goals and one helper. Lowell Abbott '14 and Ashley Crutchfield '12 notched three goals apiece. Abbott leads the Camels with 34 goals. Bri Miller '13 ended up with two goals and two assists, Izzy Marx '14 recorded one goal and three assists and Heidi Halsted '15 picked up two assists.

Marx won six draw controls and Driscoll collected five as Connecticut College finished with a 19-14 advantage in the category. Lindsey Macdonald '15 scooped up three ground balls and caused three turnovers. Kelsey Burke '13 made eight saves.

The score was tied 1-1 early, but the Continentals scored seven straight goals in less than five minutes to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Schultz converted to give Hamilton the lead for good with 22:53 left in the first half. Allen scored on a free-position shot, Friedman tallied an unassisted goal and Hoar scored from D'Antonio for a 5-1 advantage. Beres notched her eighth goal, D'Antonio scored from a free position and Friedman made it 8-1 with 18:10 remaining.

The Camels (5-8, 1-7) tried to rally. Trailing 10-2 late in the first half, Connecticut College scored the last three goals of the first half and the first three goals of the second half to climb within 10-8. Miller scored on a free-position shot with 4:27 left, Driscoll found the back of the net on a feed from Halsted and Marx assisted on Abbott's first goal of the day to make it 10-5 at the half.

Marx found Driscoll 2:25 into the second half, Halsted passed to Crutchfield for a goal and Miller fed Crutchfield to make it a two-goal margin with 24:54 remaining. Unfortunately for the Camels, the Continentals scored the next three goals for a 13-8 advantage, and Connecticut College didn't get closer than four the rest of the afternoon.

Hamilton held a 31-21 shot advantage and scored on 8 of 10 free-position shots. The Continentals committed just 11 turnovers to 18 for the Camels. Hamilton has won the last four meetings between the programs. The teams last played in 2006.

The Continentals host Williams College for another conference game under the lights at Campus Road Athletic Field on Wednesday. Connecticut College travels to Drew University for non-conference action on Tuesday.

Track and Field

The Connecticut College Track & Field teams visited Stonehill College Saturday to compete in the Skyhawk Invitational.

In a competitive field that featured three Division I teams, the women place fifth with a score of 50.50 points. The Camel men scored 30.5 points to place eighth in a 10 team field that featured four Division I schools. Junior Sarah Matthews (Westwood, Mass.) secured a third place finish in the 400 meter dash, qualifying for the New England Division III and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship with a time of 59.88 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, Sara Gildersleeve (Sharon, Mass.) place fourth with a time of 26.48 seconds.

Samantha Pevear (Somersworth, N.H.) placed in three field events Saturday. In the discus, Pevear covered a distance of 119 feet and one inch to place third, earning an invitation to the ECAC Championship. Pevear threw the shot put 35 feet and 10 inches en route to a seventh place scoring, earning an invitation to the New England Division III Championship. Pevear threw the hammer 125 feet and one inch to place eighth in a season best performance for the Camels.

In the 4x100 meter relay, Vicki Weigold (Glen, N.H.), Sara Gildersleeve, Val Svystun (Newington, Conn.) and Sarah Matthews posted a season-best time of 52.19 seconds en route to their third place scoring. Amy Klopp (Monroe, Conn.), Aly Bonito (Guilford, Conn.), Merry Byrne (Brookside, N.J.) and Maura Hallisey (Wethersfield, Conn.) place fourth in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 10:37.36. The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Matthews, Gina Deitz (Portland, Ore.), Weigold and Ali Cookson (Beverly, Mass.) finished sixth in 4:25.93.

Sophomore Lauren Cameron (Portland, Ore.) tied for fourth place in the high jump, reaching her apex at four feet, seven inches. In the 5000 meters, Lianne Swanson (Franklin, Mass.) posted a time of 19:09.89 en route to a fifth place showing.

In the men's action, sophomore Mike LeDuc (Canton, Conn.) won the 5000 meters with a time of 14:57.52, qualifying for the New England Division III, ECAC and All-New England Championships in the process. In the same event, Alex Mavrovic (Thetford Mines, Quebec) earned an invitation to the New England Division III Championship with a time of 15:26.31.

Junior Brian Gooch (Columbia, N.H.) posted a time of 11.34 seconds to place sixth in the 100 meters, qualifying for the New England Division III Championship.

In the 3000 meter steeplechase, junior Jeff Beling (Framingham, Mass.) placed fifth with a time of 11:34.14.

The 4x800 meter relay team comprised of Doug Wright (Darien, Conn.), Colin Gallant (Ashford, Conn.), Dan Post (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and Drew Majkut (Upton, Mass.) placed fourth with a time of 8:41.40.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the Camel quartet consisting of Geoff Phaneuf (Woonsocket, R.I.), Aaron Fellows (Hudson, N.H.), Aaron Davis (New London, Conn.) and Matt Boudreau (Bridgewater, Mass.) posted a time of 3:39.80 en route to a fifth place finish.
