Camels can't overcome Bantams, but make a strong show in cross country and volleyball

Connecticut College advanced to the final of the MIT Invitational in volleyball, and the Camels' cross country running teams each placed second at the Wesleyan University Invitational. Other teams struggled against Trinity College, losing to the Bantams twice and tying once. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Women's Soccer: Conn College 0, Trinity 0

First year keeper Natalie Signor (Glastonbury, Conn.) stepped off the bench to make six saves and lead the Connecticut College Camels to their first NESCAC point in a scoreless draw against Trinity College Saturday.

The Bantams remain undefeated at 3-0-2 with a 1-0-2 mark in league play while the Camels improve to a 0-3-1 and are 0-2-1 in the NESCAC.

Signor made a diving stab with 24 seconds left in the first overtime, denying Heather Lynne (Wethersfield, Conn.) with the stop that preserved the tie.

Junior Amy Lowitt (Baltimore, Md.) made three saves in 52 minutes of action as the Camels' starting keeper.

Lily Pepper (Princeton Jct., N.J.) stopped three Connecticut College shots to earn the shutout for the Bantams.

Rebecca Parente (Orange, Conn.) led the Camels with three shots, while Trinity senior Leigh Howard (Bethany, Conn.) posted a team-best seven shots for the Bantams

Men's Soccer: Trinity 2, Conn College 0

The Trinity College men's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory at Connecticut College Saturday.

The Bantams improve to 3-1-2 with a 2-0-2 record in the NESCAC, while the Camels fall to 3-2 with a 2-2 mark in league play.

Anthony El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.) chipped in a penalty kick in the 12th minute of action that proved to be the difference maker. Senior forward Dan Meyernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) added his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the first half.

Senior Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) stopped three Camel shots in the win, while Casey Marini (Hampden, Mass.) recorded two stops for the Camels.

Connecticut College out-shot Trinity 8-to-6 in the contest but the Bantams held a slim 5-to-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Field Hockey: Trinity 2, Conn College 1

Junior midfielder Haley Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) broke a 1-1 tie with 19:10 remaining and the lead stood up as the 15th ranked Trinity College field hockey team outlasted Connecticut College in a 2-1 victory.

The Bantams improve to 6-1 with a 5-1 mark in the NESCAC, while the Camels slip to 3-2 with a 1-2 mark in league play.

Sophie Doering (Darien, Conn.) delivered the pass from the end line and Sarah Duncan (Dedham, Mass.) was the stick-stop for the eventual game-winner.

Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) stopped five shots in goal for the visitors. Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Conn.) made six saves in the setback for the Camels.

Connecticut College tied the game at one with 24:19 remaining in the first half. Ali Holland (Watertown, Mass.) hit a ball from the right side to the center of the circle and Brittany Fitzgerald (Ridgefield, Conn.) was able to beat Dinallo with a one-timer for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Trinity opened the scoring at the 2:09 mark. Alanna Capasso (Weston, Mass.) tipped in a shot at the right post on a feed from the stick of Caroline Snite (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Emily Scribner (White River Jct., Vt.) contributed with a strong outing in the defensive backfield for the Camels, winning numerous 50/50 battles for the hosts.

Men's Cross Country

The Connecticut College men's cross country team made a short trip to compete in the Wesleyan University Invitational Saturday.

Head Coach Jim Butler, who is celebrating his 25th season with the program, rested his top seven this runners this week.

Connecticut College assistant men's cross country coach Shawn Mulcahy, a 2011 graduate of Connecticut College from Lebanon, Conn. was the unattached winner of the invitational with a time of 27:39 on the 8k course.

The Camels placed second in the seven team field with a score of 66 points. The host Cardinals placed the top six collegiate runners in the field to win the invitational with a score of 15 points.

Freshman Patrick Dermody (Erieville, N.Y.) was the top Camel finisher in 10th place with a time of 28:51. Billy Barnes (New York, N.Y.) placed 14th in 29:23. Aaron Davis (New London, Conn.) posted a time of 29:25 to finish 15th.

Senior Colin Gallant (Ashford, Conn.) checked in with a time of 29:51 en route to an 18th place finish. Matt Boudreau (Bridgewater, Mass.) was 25th with a time of 30:36. Dan Post (Pepper Pike, Ohio) placed 32nd in the field with a time of 31:26 and Billy Martinsky (Monroe, Conn.) was 34th in 31:42.

Women's Cross Country

The Connecticut College women's cross country team made a short drive to compete in the Wesleyan Invitational Saturday. The Camels placed second in the seven team field with a score of 59 points.

The Wesleyan Cardinals placed four of their runners among the top seven in the field to win their home invitational with a score of 25 points.

Senior Kerry Dermody (Erieville, N.Y.) placed fifth with a time of 19:58. Lindsay Paiva (Coventry, R.I.) posted a time of 20:03 to finish eighth for Connecticut College.

Lianne Swanson (Franklin, Mass.) checked in with a time of 20:17 to finish 13th in the field. Aly Bonito (Guilford, Conn.) was 18th with a time of 20:36. Michelle Wesley (Millwood, N.Y.) posted a time of 20:46 as the 21st finisher and fifth Camel scorer.

Senior Libby Maret (Sandy Hook, Conn.) was 26th with a time of 20:58 and Heather Rochford finished 35th with a time of 21:44. Sophomore Grace Glynn (Saco, Maine) was the eighth Camel to complete the course in the 21:54.

Volleyball

The Connecticut College volleyball team (8-3) advanced to the final of the MIT Invitational this weekend, posting victories against Wellesley, Frostburg State and MIT before falling to Springfield College in the finale.

Senior Amy Newman (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, Calif.) were both named to the All-Invitational Team.

The Camels had their six match winning streak snapped against Springfield, the second ranked team in New England with a 3-1 loss. The game scores were 20-25, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-13 in favor of Springfield.

Newman had 12 kills and 12 digs en route to her fifth double-double of the season in the finale. Bianca Smith (San Jose, Calif.) contributed with eight kills and nine digs. Rachel Schroff buried nine kills and Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) distributed 29 assists.

Earlier in the day, the Camels knocked off a 13-1 MIT team that was ranked #4 in New England in a 3-0 blanking. The game scores were 25-22, 25-18 and 25-22 in favor of the Camels.

Newman had 13 kills and 11 digs in the match. Ketcham finished with 30 assists and a pair of blocks. Bianca Smith had eight kills while Erin Barker (Edwards, Colo.) chipped in with four aces.

Friday night, the Camels rallied from a 2-1 deficit to outlast the talented Bobcats of Frostburg State University, 3-2. Game scores were 25-27, 25-21, 23-25, 25-12 and 15-12. Frostburg advanced all the way to the NCAA round of 16 teams in 2010.

Katie Ketcham dished out a career-best 57 assists to go with eight kills. Newman erupted with 26 kills. Schroff buried 19 kills to go with six digs.

Earlier on Friday, the Camels secured a 3-1 victory against Wellesley College in the opening round of play. The game scores were 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-12 in favor of the Camels.

Junior setter Katie Ketcham distributed 41 assists to go with three aces in the Wellesley win. Newman posted her third double-double of the season with 25 kills and 11 digs.

Melissa Kohl (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) chipped in with seven kills while sophomore Erin Barker recorded seven service aces in the win.
