Women's basketball team upsets Williams; women's hockey team defeats Colby

The women's basketball team surprised Williams College with a victory in a high-scoring game on Saturday, while the men's team fell to the same school. In hockey action, the women's team defeated Colby College while the men's team fell to Amherst College. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Women's Basketball: Conn College 81, Williams 72

Senior Jenn Shinall (Redding, Conn.) exploded with a career-high 30 points and Tara Gabelman tied a Connecticut College single game record with 23 rebounds to go along with 17 points as Connecticut College continued improved to 12-2 (3-1 NESCAC) with an 81-72 victory against Williams College, the 18th ranked team in the nation.

The Ephs (14-2) suffer just their second setback of the season and are 2-2 in conference action.

Shinall was 6-for-8 from three point distance and 10-for-12 from the charity stripe.

Gabelman racked up 13 of her 23 rebounds in the second stanza in her ninth double-double of the season. She ties the single game rebounding record with Esty Wood Satran '93, who set the record back in 1990.

Kacie Quick (Winchester, Mass.) chipped in with nine points off the bench. Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.) tallied eight point and nine assists for the Ephs.

Jill Greenberg (Westwood, Mass.) finished with 21 points and eight assists to lead the visitors. Danny Rainer (Marlborough, Mass.) added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Ephs. Ellen Cook (Eugene, Ore.) reached double-digits with 10 points.

Shinall carried the hot hand early, scoring 16 points in the first half. The Camels took their largest lead of the opening half when Kaitlyn Cresencia (New Providence, N.J.) delivered a nifty looking bounce pass for a deuce that vaulted the Camels out to a 40-33 lead. The Camels carried a 40-34 advantage into the break.

In the second stanza, the Camels took a commanding 65-54 lead when Shinall buried her sixth triple of the night with 6:58 remaining.

However, the Ephs battled back and used a pair of free throw from Ellen Cook (Eugene, Ore.) to trim the deficit to 73-69 with 50 seconds left.

But the Camels took care of business on the foul line to close out the 81-72 victory.

Men's Basketball: Williams 71, Conn College 50

Junior guard James Klemm (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) poured in a game-high 19 points to lead the 14th ranked Williams College men's basketball team to a 71-50 victory at Connecticut College Saturday.

The Ephs improve their record to 13-3 and are 2-2 in the NESCAC, while the Camels fall to 5-10 with an 0-4 mark in conference play.

Klemm was 7-for-12 from the field and 5-for-10 from long distance. Sophomore center Michael Mayer (Durham, N.C.) chipped in with 14 points for the visitors.

Connecticut College sophomore Matt Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) finished with 15 points and six rebounds in the setback. Bryan Gross (Great Falls, Va.) scored 10 point in 13 minutes of action off the bench.

"We had a tough day offensively and never really found our rhythm," Connecticut College head men's basketball coach Tom Satran said. "Williams was able to capitalize on a few ball handling mistakes at the beginning of the second half and we never recovered from that."

This was a back and forth battle in the opening half. Williams led by as many as six but a Vadas field goal with 1:55 to go trimmed the visitors' advantage to 30-28.

On the ensuing possession, Klemm knocked down a three and the visitors carried a 33-28 lead into the break.

Midway through the second half, the Ephs found their range on the perimeter and were able to take hold of their largest lead at 59-34 when Klemm buried a three ball at the 10:33 mark.

The visitors were able to hold on for the 71-50 victory.

Williams will return home to host the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. game.

Connecticut College will take on the on Monday night for a 7:00 p.m. game at Luce Field House.

Women's Ice Hockey: Conn College 4, Colby 1

Connecticut College scored three goals in the opening 5:09 of play on the way to a 4-1 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference women's hockey Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Jen Morgan (Orange, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal at 2:14 from Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) to give the Camels (5-5-2 overall, 3-4-1 NESCAC) a 1-0 lead. Ariel DiPasquale notched her sixth goal of the season at 4:51 from Courtney Dumont (Lewiston, Maine) and Olivia Farrell (New York, N.Y.). The Camels made it 3-0 just 18 seconds later when Driscoll scored her first goal of the season from Lauren Posillico (Nesconset, N.Y.). Grace Dickinson (Northfield, Ill.) took over in net for Colby after the third goal and went on to allow just one goal and make 34 saves.

The Mules cut the lead to 3-1 with the lone goal of the second period. Natalie Fischer scored the first goal of her career at 16:56 from Maddy Borek (Durham, N.H.) and Sylvia Xistris (Larchmont, N.Y.). Connecticut College had another player score their first collegiate goal when Amelia Dineen (Arlington, Mass.) closed out the scoring at 8:22 of the third period from Andrea McRae (Stittsville, Ontario).

Camel goaltender Amy Leichliter (West Chester, Pa.) stopped 25 shots.

Men's Ice Hockey: Amherst 3, Conn College 2

The Amherst College men's hockey team skated to a 3-2 victory against Connecticut College in a NESCAC men's hockey game played at Dayton Arena Saturday.

Amherst improves to 11-2-1 with an 8-1 record in league play, while the Camels fall to 4-9-1 with a 2-6 mark in conference action.

Dylan Trumble (McLean, Va.) scored the goal that proved to be the difference with 10:32 remaining in regulation.

Erik Hansen (Deephaven, Minn.) and Jamie Hawking (Waterdown, Ontario) chipped in with scores for the seventh ranked Lord Jeffs.

Mike Sinsigalli (Wilton, Conn.) scored his fifth goal of the season in the second period and Sean Murray (Stamford, Conn.) added a third period tally for the Camels.

Nathan Corey (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 32 of 34 shots to earn the victory for the visitors. Andrew Margolin (Mahwah, N.J.) made 11 saves in two periods of action and was relieved by Marcus Calvanico (Flower Mound, Tex.), who stopped 10 shots in goal for Connecticut College.

The Camels out-shot the Lord Jeffs 34-to-24 in the contest.
