Amherst College Takes Two Basketball Games, Draws in Hockey

Men's Basketball: Amherst College 70, Connecticut College 56

Sophomore Allen Williamson (Saugus, Mass.) poured in a game-high 20 points in a perfect 10-for-10 shooting performance to lead the 10th ranked Amherst College men's basketball team to a 70-56 victory against Connecticut College in the NESCAC opener for both sides played at Luce Friday night.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 13-0 with the triumph, while the Camels slip to 7-6.

Peter Kaasila (Plaistow, N.H.) and Aaron Toomey (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with 11 points each for the Lord Jeffs.

Connecticut College sophomore Rob Harrigan (Milford, Conn.) finished with 16 points and three rebounds for the hosts. Matt Vadas added 13 points and four rebounds for the Camels.

"I thought our team played hard and at times very well against an outstanding Amherst team," Connecticut College head men's basketball coach Tom Satran said. "We have to brush ourselves off and play with even better effort tomorrow."

The visitors shot 61% from the field in the opening half and carried a 39-26 lead into the break.

Williamson extended the lead to 59-39 with 11:02 remaining in regulation.

The Camels responded though and put together a productive 11-to-2 run to trim the deficit to 61-50 after Harrigan dropped in a three-ball from the left side with 5:58 remaining.

But the visitors used a pair of hoops in the post by Kaasila to push the lead back to 15 and were able to hold on for the 70-56 win.

The Camels will host Trinity College this afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. NESCAC tilt in New London.

Women's Basketball: Amherst College 61, Connecticut College 42

Top ranked Amherst College opened the game with a 16-to-0 to take control in a 61-42 victory against Connecticut College in the NESCAC opener for both sides played at Luce Field House Friday night.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 14-1 with the win, while the Camels (7-7) had their five-game winning streak suspended in the setback.

Jaclyn Daigneault (Guilford, Conn.) logged game-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds in the win. Kristyn Dunleavy (East Setauket, N.Y.) added eight points for the winning side.

Connecticut College junior Jenn Shinall (Redding, Conn.) finished with 11 points and four rebounds in the contest. Tara Gabelman (Irvington, N.Y.) contributed seven points and five boards for the Camels.

Jeanna Dunleavy (Chatham, N.J.) finished with eight points for Connecticut College.

After being out-scored 34-to-15 in the opening half, the Camels matched the visitors' offensive output in the second stanza with 27 points.

The Camels will host Trinity College this afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. game in New London.

Men's Hockey: Connecticut College 2, Amherst College 2

J.J. McGregor (Wichita, Kan.) scored the equalizer with 12:44 remaining in regulation and the Connecticut College Camels secured a valuable point in the NESCAC standings with a 2-2 tie against Amherst College Friday night.

The Camels improved to 4-5-3 with a 4-3-1 record in conference play. The Lord Jeffs are 6-1-4 with a 6-3-4 record overall.

Senior co-captain Ryan Riffe (South Berwick, Maine) potted a second period goal for the Camels. Jordan Gray (Mississauga, Ont.) dished out two assists for the hosts.

Andrew Margolin (Mahwah, N.J.) made 19 saves in goal for the Camels.

Nick Brunette (Chaska, Minn.) and Luke Arnold (Lincoln, Mass.) scored goals for Amherst. Nathan Corey (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 22 shots in the draw for the visitors. Arnold vaulted the visitors out to a 2-to-1 with his third goal of the season at 17:17 of the middle period.

But Gray made the key play to help secure the tie. The senior skated into the zone and made a cross-crease pass to McGregor for the game tying marker. Sean Curran (Wilmette, Ill.) had the second assist on the goal.

The Camels out-shot the Lord Jeffs 3-to-0 in the extra session but the game ended in a draw.

Connecticut College will host Hamilton College this afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. game in New London.
