Camel competitions for Saturday

Track and Field

The Connecticut College track and field teams visited Wesleyan University Saturday to compete in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship.

Mike LeDuc (Canton, Conn.) posted a time of 9:24.40 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to finish third in the event. The Camel men placed ninth at the Championship with a score of 25.50 points.

Lilas Humen (Cranford, N.J.) set a school record in the pole vault, reaching a height of nine feet, six and one quarter of an inch en route to a ninth place finish. The Camel women finished 11th at the Championship.

The Camel men set two school records Saturday. In the 4x100 meter relay, the Camel foursome comprised of Brian Gooch (Columbia, N.H.), Alex DeShields (Melrose, Mass.), Chris May (Hudson, Ohio), and Tommy Howd (Sudbury, Mass.) teamed up for a fifth place score with a time of 43.89 seconds. Mike LeDuc, Howd, Tristan Cole (St. Helen, Calif.) and Andrew Duarte (Rocky Hill,Conn.) added another record with a sixth place time of 10:25.18 in the distance medley relay.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the aforementioned LeDuc placed third while sophomore Tim Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) was sixth with a time of 9:38. Both LeDuc and Murtagh qualified for the New England Division III, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the All-New England Championship.

In the 100 meter dash, Gooch qualified for the New England Division III Championship with a fourth place time of 11.35 seconds. Colin Gallant (Ashford, Conn.) earned an invitation to the New England Division III Championship in the 10k with his finish in 33:08.16.

The Camels had three other scorers Saturday. Doug Wright (Darien, Conn.) posted a time of 32:08.39 to finish sixth in the 10k. Duarte was eighth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:00.36. Howd tied for eighth place in the high jump, reaching his apex at five feet, 11 and one quarter of an inch.

Humen qualified for the New England Division III Championship with her record setting performance in the pole vault. Joining her at MIT will be sophomore Merry Byrne (Brookside, N.J.), who had her ticket stamped in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 69.67 seconds.

The Camels added three more ninth place finishes Saturday.

Haley Goodwill (Marlborough, Conn.) posted a time of 2:18.70 in the 800 meter run. Goodwill, Michelle Wesley (Millwood, N.Y.), Ali Holland (Watertown, Mass.) and Byrne logged a time of 4:17.43 in the 4x400 meter relay. In the 5k, Manya Swick (Niantic, Conn.) posted a time of 18:22.56.

Tennis

The Connecticut College men's and women's tennis teams closed out the 2010-2011 season with a sweep against NESCAC rival Hamilton College.

The women earned their third straight win with a 6-3 triumph, while the men posted their first conference win in a 5-4 win.

The Camel women finish with a record of 10-11 and a 3-5 mark in conference play, while the men close out their campaign at 12-10 (1-7 NESCAC).

Senior Becca Heupel (Eden Prairie, Minn.) secured a 6-2, 6-3 win at #2 singles in her final match for the Camels. In doubles action, Heupel and classmate Caroline Barone (North Kingstown, R.I.) paired up for an 8-6 victory.

The men received valuable contributions from their two senior leaders. Trevor Prophet (Nashua, N.H.) earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at #1 singles. At #4 singles, Craig Stanton (Warwick, R.I.) triumphed in a 6-2, 6-2 victory for Head Coach Chris O'Brien's Camels.

Rowing

The Connecticut College men's and women's rowing teams enjoyed a successful day of competition at the New England Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester Saturday.

The women's team won a pair of gold medals and one bronze, while the men's team celebrated with a gold medal in the novice four regatta.

In the women's varsity four, the Camels posted the second fastest time in championship history at 7:36 to bring home the gold medal to New London.

Bowdoin College finished second with a time of 7:39 and Amherst College was third in 7:53.

Junior Lucy Frye (Wenham, Mass.) handled the stroke row and was joined by Seana Siekman (Bethel, Maine) and Emily Perry (Westfield, N.J.) with Meghan McLean (Old Lyme, Conn.) seated in the bow. Sophomore Maureen Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) guided the Camels to the victory as the coxswain.

The Camel women added another gold medal in the second varsity four. Connecticut College posted a time of 7:58 and was followed by Amherst College (8:10) and Clark University, who took third place with a time of 8:54.

Senior Miriam Singer (Lyndhurst, Ohio) handled the stroke row. Janan Evans-Wilent (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Caity Sprague (Bristol, R.I.) were joined by Lila Douglis (Belmont, Mass.) in the bow seat. Sophomore Kate Gulick-Tuers (Ringoes, N.J.) was the coxswain for the winning boat.

In the novice four regatta, the Camel women won a bronze medal with a time of 8:16. Bowdoin won the regatta with a time of 8:08 and the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire took the Silver Medal with a time of 8:14.

Sophomore Emily Wilde (Potomac, Md.) was positioned in the stroke seat. Sophia Muller (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Lindsey Stokes (Providence, R.I.) were joined by Emily Goldstein (Amherst, Mass.) in the bow seat. Val Phillips-Goldstein (Brookline, Mass.) was the coxswain for the Camels. Head Coach Ric Ricci's men's squad scored a clutch victory in the novice four regatta.

The Camels posted a winning time of 7:12, outlasting the University of New Hampshire (7:24) and Bowdoin College, who took the bronze with a time of 7:32.

Phil Stueber (Darien, Conn.) was positioned in the stroke seat and Drew Frazier coxed the boat. Travis Beach (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and Matt August were joined by Nick Gollner (Tuckahoe, N.Y.), who was seated in the bow.
