Camels drop lacrosse matches

Connecticut College lost a series of matches on Saturday, but won one of two water polo matches. The following information was provided by the William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Lacrosse: Colby 8, Conn College 7

John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) scored with 1:40 remaining in overtime Saturday to lift the Colby College men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory against Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) game that was moved to Trinity College in Hartford.

Jennings and Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) both finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Mules, who battled back from a 5-3 deficit in the third quarter.

Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) chipped in with two goals and a game-best eight ground balls for Colby. Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with three saves in the win.

Connecticut College sophomore John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) scored with 1:07 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime and finished with a goal and an assist for the Camels. Seniors Mark Mangano (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) both contributed scores in what was scored officially as their final home game.

Nick Rodricks (Baltimore, Md.) collected five ground balls and junior net-minder John Lenehan (Hingham, Mass.) turned in another stellar effort between the pipes, finishing with 11 saves in the setback.

Both teams have qualified for the 2011 NESCAC Championship Tournament. Quarterfinal match ups will be played on the campus of the top four seeds next Sunday, May 1.

Jennings vaulted the Mules out to a 3-1 advantage with his goal at 8:27 of the second quarter. But the Camels battled back, scoring the final two goals of the half. Danny Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) supplied the equalizer with 19 seconds left.

In the third quarter, the Camels erupted with two quick scoring strikes in the opening minute to build a 5-3 advantage. Mangano scored on a feed from Lyons and Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won a face-off and sprinted straight to the cage for an unassisted marker with 14:14 left.

However, Colby answered when McKillop scored on a feed from Jennings with 1:51 remaining and the Camels lead was trimmed to 5-4 as they headed for the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The teams traded goals but Colby forged a 6-6 tie when Deveau rifled one home with 4:51 remaining. With 3:34 to play, Deveau assisted Derrick Flahive (Littleton, Colo.) and the Mules were back on top with a 7-6 advantage.

But Rodricks was able to secure a critical ground ball that set the stage for Lyons' game tying goal with 1:07 remaining.

In the overtime, Colby was able to induce a turnover that set up a 2-on-1 unsettled situation. Jennings fired one home from point blank range to close out the victory.

Women's Lacrosse: Colby 6, Conn College 4

Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, Conn.) won her 49th career game at Colby College in one of her best efforts after making 14 saves Saturday to lead the eighth-ranked Mules to a tough 6-4 win over Connecticut College in women's lacrosse in the rain on Bill Alfond Field.

With the victory, Colby clinches a home New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game next Sunday. The Mules move to 11-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play, while Connecticut College fell to 5-9 overall and 0-8 in the league.

Warnke, who has a 49-11 career record with the Mules, made seven saves in each period. She had a number of stops off Camel shots from close range. Warnke was one of Colby's eight seniors playing their final regular season game at home.

Caitlin Cataldo (Milford, Conn.) also stopped a number of difficult shots and finished with seven saves for Connecticut College.

Colby scored two goals in the first 4:54 of play to take early command. Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) scored off a free-position shot and Tess Petesch (Rockville, Md.) tallied unassisted.

Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) cut the Camels' deficit to one after scoring with 22:13 remaining off a pass from Izzy Mark (Ridgewood, N.J.). However, Colby's Lindsey McKenna (Fairfield, Conn.) scored the final goal of the half with 6:49 to play from Lucy Gerrity (Cumberland, Maine).

Anne Geraghty (Westford, Mass.) tallied just 20 seconds into the second half to give the Mules a 4-1. She finished with a game-high five draw controls and reached 30 goals for her career.c

Libby Nichols (Baltimore, Md.) scored unassisted with 27:17 to play and Driscooll fired in a free-position shot to bring the Camels to within one at 4-3. Colby's Hilary Barr (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored with 14:31 left the second half and Casey Thomas added an insurance goal with 2:58 to play, Haley Dumke (Scarsdale, N.Y.) closed out the scoring with Connecticut College's final goal with 45 second to play.

Mary Cummings (Summit, N.J.), a senior defender, had six groundballs and one caused turnover for the winners.

Women's Water Polo

Sophomore Kristin Lampley (Reading, Pa.) scored seven goals Saturday to lead the Connecticut College women's water polo team (6-10) to a split in two matches played at Lott Natatorium.

Lampley scored five times in an 11-7 triumph against Utica (4-11) and added two scores in a 12-3 setback to the Bears of Brown University (12-16). Lampley leads the squad with 46 goals scored this spring.

Junior defender Katie Mullaley (Hingham, Mass.) chipped in with four scores for the Camels.

Sophomore Pam Lovejoy (Guilford, Conn.) stopped 14 shot in the two matches and has recorded a team-best 61 saves this season.

Brown defeated Utica in the third match by a count of 14-6.
