Connecticut College, Coast Guard Academy Make Top 10 In Track Championship

Bears place seventh, Camels make first ever appearance in top 10

The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College, and the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

The Connecticut College track and field teams visited MIT for the New England Division III Championship Saturday. It was a great day for both the Camel men and women.

The Camel men cracked the top 10 for the first time in program history, taking 10th place with a score of 25 points. An improving women's team scored five points en route to a 22nd place finish.

Senior Shawn Mulcahy (Lebanon, Conn.) continues to build on his strong spring season. Mulcahy placed second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:52.42. Earlier this spring at Princeton University, Mulcahy provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 10k.

Joining Mulcahy as an NCAA Provisional Qualifier was Mike LeDuc (Canton, Conn.), who posted a time of 9:18.54 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to finish third in the event. LeDuc set a personal record with his All-New England Division III performance and his time ranked second on the program's all-time list. Former All-American Brian Murtagh '09 holds the school record with his memorable finish at the 2009 NCAA Championship in 9:08.41.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Doug Wright (Darien, Conn.) set a personal record with a time of 15:00.89 to place third, earning All-New England Division III honors for the Camels.

The Camel men added two more All-New England Division III scores Saturday.

In the 4x800 meter relay, the Camel foursome comprised of Matt Boudreau (Bridgewater, Mass.), Tristan Cole (St. Helen, Calif.), Dan Post (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and Andrew Duarte (Rocky Hill, Conn.) set a school record in their sixth place finish with a time of 7:55.88.

In the 800 meters, Duarte finished seventh, setting a personal record with a time of 1:55.86.

In the women's championship, senior Haley Goodwill (Marlborough, Conn.) provided the most significant highlight of the day for the Camels with her performance in the 800 meters. Goodwill set a Connecticut College record with a fourth place finish in 2:15.61 to earn All-New England Division III Honors. Meredith Stebbins '05, held the previous mark with a time of 2:16.70.

In the 100 meter hurdles, Carmen Palumbo (Wilmington, Mass.) move into second place on the schools all-time leader list with a personal record setting time of 15.95 seconds.

Ali Holland (Watertown, Mass.) set a personal record of her own in the triple jump, moving up to fourth place on the Camels' all-time leader list, covering a distance of 34 feet, eight and one half of an inch.

Manya Swick (Niantic, Conn.) set a personal record with a 10th place finish in the 10k, logging a time of 38:47.75 for the Camels.

In the 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Merry Byrne (Brookside, N.J.), set a personal record with a time of 67.35 seconds.

The Camel men had some other notable performances this weekend.

In the 4x400 meter relay, Geoff Phaneuf (Woonsocket, R.I.), Ian Rathkey, Aaron Fellows (Hudson, N.H.) and Chris May (Hudson, Ohio) ran their fastest time of the season in 3:30.05.

Sophomore Brian Gooch (Columbia, N.H.), Alex DeShields (Melrose, Mass.), Geoff Phaneuf and Tommy Howd (Sudbury, Mass.) posted their second fastest finish of the season in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 44.01 seconds.

Sophomore Tim Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) set a personal with a time of 15:12.16 in the 5k.

Colin Gallant (Ashford, Conn.) posted a time of 33:33.00 to finish 14th in the 10k.

Coast Guard Academy

Freshman Adam Scalesse was second in the 110 hurdles (14.92) while senior Kyle Coleman was second in the 400 hurdles (54.00) to earn All-New England honors and lead Coast Guard to a seventh place finish at the New England Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at MIT.

Coast Guard finished with 36 points while Williams won the meet with 151 points edging NEWMAC champion MIT’s 147 points.

Also earning All-New England honors for the Bears with top eight finishes were Scalesse, who took fourth in the 400 hurdles (54.32). Junior Kevin O’Brien was fifth in the 10,000 meters (32:07.17), freshman Clay Kosack placed sixth in the decathlon with 5,184 points, sophomore Tieran Bonner placed seventh in the 100 meters (22.61), senior John Jaskot took seventh in the high jump (1.88 meters), senior Jordan Kellham was seventh in the pole vault (4.40 meters). Freshman Ben Wolhaupter took eighth, clearing the same 4.40 meters while sophomore Will Baker took eighth in the discus (44.38 meters).
