Conn College Sailors Qualify For IPSA Semifinal

Holds off BU for final spot

The Connecticut College coed sailing team will participate in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Eastern Semifinal Championship. The Camels held off Boston University by only a six point margin in placing eighth out of nine at the New England Dinghy Championship. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

The Camels will head west to compete in the Eastern Semifinal Championship at Long Beach, Calif. April 30-May 1. The event will be hosted by the University of Southern California, the United States Sailing Center at Long Beach.

First year skipper Kevin Martland (Newport, R.I.) and senior crew Kevin Lau-Hansen (Larchmont, N.Y.) helped lead the Camels to nationals, scoring 96 points en route to their seventh place finish in the B division.

In the A division, Peter Miller (Paget, Bermuda), Maggie Shea (Wilmette, Ill.), Atlantic Brugman (Barcelona, Spain), Stephen Sweriduk (Dartmouth, Mass.), Lucy Wallace (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and Mike Marshall (Jamestown, R.I.) all contributed to a 10th place finish and score of 118 points for Connecticut College.

The fourth ranked Connecticut College women's sailing team competed in the Emily Wick/Sloop Shrew Regatta on the Thames River. The Camels placed 11th in the 18 team field with a score of 318 points.

Boston College won the regatta with a score of 120 points, while the Brown Bears took second with 127 points.

Juniors Bitsy Whipple (Plandome, N.Y.) and Claire Sacco (Glenmont, N.Y.) paired up for a score of 94 points en route to their fifth place finish in the A division.

In the B division, Lindsey Press (Wayne, Pa.), Sarah Price (Freeport, Maine) and Irasz Korezlioglu (Istanbul, Turkey) placed 15th with a score of 224 points
