Coast Guard Takes Doubleheader

Bears defeat MIT on Sunday

The Coast Guard Academy baseball team won an opening game 5-4 and closing game 5-2 to defeat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a Sunday doubleheader. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Coast Guard Academy was led by Eric Gerken who went 5 for 6 on the day at the plate including three doubles and scoring four runs for the Bears.

In game one, MIT struck first in the top of the first inning when McKinney scored on an RBI double.

The Bears were quick to answer in the bottom of the first inning scoring Gerken and Babkiewich for two runs. Gerken led off the Bears half of the first with a double to right center. Gerken would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Petry and score on a wild pitch.

MIT would take a 4-2 lead in the top of the third inning scoring three runs on four hits three of which being good for doubles.

The Bears would answer back with two outs in the bottom of the fourth for three runs to take the 5-4 lead. The Bears rallied with four straight two out hits highlighted by a double by Gerken.

The Bears held their 5-4 advantage into the top of the seventh inning where Tyler Vieira came on in relief to get his third save of the season for the Bears.

The Bears finished game one with five runs on eight hits and one error to beat MIT who finish the first game with four runs on 11 hits and no errors.

In game two, The Bears would score first in the bottom of the first inning making the Coast Guard lead 4-0 after one inning of play.

The Bears finished game two with five runs on five hits and two errors to best MIT who would finish with two runs on five hits and one error.
