The Worcester Polytechnic Institute defeated the Coast Guard Academy 5-2 in a softball opener and again 4-2 in a second game on Saturday. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:
The Engineers improve to 14-8 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 14-9 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
WPI scored three runs in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie in the opener.
Stacia Sarwinski and Holli Bastinck each had two hits and drove in a run in game one for the Bears.
In game two, The Engineers scored three unearned runs in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and complete the sweep.
Kaitlin Ward had two of the Bears five hits in the game two loss.
Catherine Walker (7-5) took the loss in both games for Coast Guard. She allowed nine hits and five earned runs while walking five and fanning four in the opener. In game two, Walker allowed seven hits, but just one earned run with four walks and three strikeouts.
