Coast Guard Splits With Albertus Magnus

Bears give up lead in first game, come from behind in second

The Coast Guard Academy gave up a lead to lose 9-8 to Albertus Magnus College in the first game of a Monday doubleheader, but came back in the second game for a 9-6 win. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

In the opener, Eric Gerken had a double and triple while Tyler Babkiewich, Nolan Gallagher and Ed Sella each had two hits. Gallagher had a pair of RBI’s.

The Bears led 8-4 before Albertus scored three runs in the fifth and a pair of unearned runs in the sixth for the 9-8 lead after Coast Guard had the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the sixth, but failed to score.

Freshman Anthony Martin (1-3) took the loss in relief for Coast Guard allowing a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Junior Nate Toll started and was touched for seven hits and seven earned runs in four innings.

In the nightcap, Cameron Carroll’s two-run double broke a 2-2 tie giving the Bears a 4-2 lead in the fourth before the Falcons scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth for a 5-4 lead.

Coast Guard responded with three runs in the sixth as Eddie Kalankiewicz walked, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch before Carroll, who also walked scored on a wild pitch for a 6-5 lead. The Bears added an insurance run on a bases loaded walk to Joe Petry for a 7-5 lead.

Dave Wolinski’s two-run single in the seventh gave the Bears some breathing room.

James Diddell (1-0) worked the first five innings allowing five hits and five unearned runs while walking three and striking out four to get the win. Junior Will Shuttleworth, making his collegiate debut went an inning and allowed a hit and an unearned run while walking one and striking out two. Vieira struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh to pickup his second save of the season.

Coast Guard is now 8-11 overall while the Falcons are 2-8 on the season.
