Coast Guard Splits In Tri-Meet

Giorgio brothers lead Bears in Friday competition

The Coast Guard Academy wrestling team prevailed over Western New England University on Friday before falling to Johnson & Wales University in a tri-meet. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Freshman Nate Giorgio, the top ranked 125-pound wrestler in New England, and his brother Mike each won a pair of matches as Coast Guard beat Western New England 35-9 before falling to Johnson & Wales 36-11 in a tri-meet, the final home meet of the season.

Nate Giorgio won by pin at 133 pounds in 3:36 in the win over Western New England before winning a 15-0 tech fall in 2:57 against Johnson & Wales to pick up his 25th win of the season. He is 25-6 on the season, with eight pins.

Mike Giorgio, also a freshman, won both of his matches by pin as he won in just 35 seconds at 157 pounds vs. Western New England before recording a pin in 5:24 at 149 pounds vs. Johnson & Wales, his 15th win of the season and third pin.

Freshman Mark Howard registered a pin in 6:02 at 197 in the opening bout of the evening against Western New England and also for the Bears, sophomore Luke Taylor won by tech fall 17-0 at 174 pounds, classmate John Tabb won 8-6 in overtime at 149, freshman Nolan Salyer won 8-4 at 184 and freshman Vaughn Gehman won by forfeit at 165 pounds for the Bears in the win.

Johnson & Wales beat Western New England 41-9 in the other match in the tri-meet. Coast Guard is now 4-14 in dual meets this season.

Coast Guard head coach Steve Eldridge, in his 46th season as head coach, was honored before the start of the meet for his 45 years of service in the federal government.
