Coast Guard Softball Continues To Impress; MIT Snaps Bears' Winning Streak

Feindel hits 1,000 strikeouts in softball double victory; MIT breaks baseball's winning streak

The Coast Guard Academy's softball team continued its winning streak on Saturday, while MIT broke one held by the baseball team. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department.

Junior All-American Hayley Feindel fired a pair of shutouts and registered the 1,000th strikeout of her career and sophomore Holli Bastinck drove in five runs as Coast Guard, ranked 10th nationally, swept Worcester Polytechnic Institute 3-0 and 8-0 in six innings in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

In the opener, Feindel fired a two-hit shutout, walked one and struck out 11 before throwing a one-hitter with two walks and 12 strikeouts in the night cap. She became the 12th player in NCAA Division III history to record 1,000 strikeouts and now has 1,005 career punch outs.

Feindel improves to 21-1 on the season with 15 shutouts.

Sophomore Holli Bastinck blasted a two-out, three-run homer in the fifth for the only runs of the game. After the first two outs were recorded, junior Maddie Buchert walked and senior Amanda Frederick singled before Bastinck blasted her second homer of the season to left field.

In game two, Bastinck’s two-run double broke a scoreless tie and highlighted a six-run fourth inning as the Bears improved to 21-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Coast Guard had seven hits in the sixth with sophomore Catherine Walker having an RBI single, junior Jamie Kim and freshman Devin Fellman delivering RBI doubles and sophomore Summer Dupler adding an RBI groundout in the inning.

Frederick hit a solo homer in the fifth before Fellman ended the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the eight-run rule.

WPI drops to 14-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Baseball: MIT 14, Coast Guard 6

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology scored in seven different innings to beat Coast Guard 14-6 and snap the Bears four-game winning streak in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

MIT led 13-0 before the Bears scored two runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior Eddie Kalankiewicz and the Bears also added a run on an error.

Coast Guard (13-8, 3-4), which had just three hits in the game, scored four runs in the eighth as junior Mike Salerno walked with the bases loaded, Kalankiewicz was hit by a pitch to force in a run and sophomore Tyler Babkiewich added an RBI ground out.

Sophomore Derek Petty (1-3) took the loss for the Bears as he allowed seven runs, six earned in five innings work.

Coast Guard and MIT will play a doubleheader in Cambridge on Sunday to wrapup the three-game series.
