Coast Guard Racks Up Victories

Baseball and Softball teams are on a roll.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy proves its power on the diamond, in no small part thanks to pitcher Hayley Feindel. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Hayley Feindel Is Pitcher of the Week, Again!

Junior All-American Hayley Feindel has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week as Coast Guard, ranked 12th nationally, won all four games to run its win streak to 14 to start the season, the Bears best start in school history.

Feindel was brilliant once again as she posted a 4-0 record and did not allow an earned run in 27 innings with three shutouts.

She allowed just 12 hits and a pair of unearned runs while walking five and striking out 45 to lower her ERA to a minuscule 0.08. Feindel has allowed one earned run in 92 innings this season with 163 strikeouts.

The junior, who was the national Division III Player of the Week last week, now has 11 shutouts this season and 38 in her career. She is 13th all-time in Division III with 912 strikeouts and has a career record of 80-16 after leading the nation in wins in each of the last two seasons. Her 80 wins are 25th all-time in Division III history.

Coast Guard has outscored its opponents 43-3 this season and opponents are batting just .102 against Feindel.

Softball: Bears Improve to 14-0; Sweep Babson

Junior All-American Hayley Feindel tossed a pair of shutouts to lead 12th-ranked Coast Guard to a double-header sweep of Babson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams. The Bears (14-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) won by scores of 7-0 and 1-0 in the two contests, which were played on the campus of Wellesley College. Babson saw its record fall to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference, with six of the team's losses coming against nationally-ranked opponents. Three of those contests have been decided by a single run.

Coast Guard scored in each of the first four innings of game one, beginning with a leadoff homer by freshman Devin Fellman in the top of the first - the first round-tripper of her collegiate career.

Freshman Kaitlin Ward then doubled and later scored on a sac fly by sophomore Stacia Sarwinski in the second, and sophomore Holli Bastinck doubled in junior Maddie Buchert to make it 3-0 in the third.

The Bears broke the game open with three runs in the top of the fourth, all coming with two outs. Fellman drove in sophomore Megan Cook with the first run and, after a single by Buchert, senior All-American Amanda Frederick plated two more with a single to center. Coast Guard completed the scoring two innings later, when Frederick walked and later scored on an RBI-fielder's choice by Sawwinski to finish off the 7-0 win.

Feindel was magnificent in the opener for the Bears, allowing just three hits, walking none and striking out eight to earn her 10th shutout of the season. The only hits she allowed were a single by Babson senior captain Jess Winer in the second, a single by sophomore Jackie Enos in the third, and a double to right by junior captain Nicole Latini in the fourth.

Freshman Tess Rubega started and went four innings for the Beavers, allowing six runs and striking out one. Classmate Christina Miquel came on in relief and pitched the final three innings, giving up one run on four hits and fanning a pair.

Game two featured a brilliant pitchers' duel between Feindel and Babson sophomore Megan Brain, who gave up just one run on seven hits in seven innings. However, Feindel continued to baffle the Beavers in the nightcap, firing a five-hit shutout with just two walks and 11 strikeouts. The win improved her record to a perfect 14-0 on the year with 11 shutouts, while Brain saw her record fall to 3-3.

The Bears scored the only run of game two in the top of the first inning, with Fellman once again serving a the catalyst when she drew a leadoff walk. Buchert then moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt and Frederick drove her in with a sharply hit single to right-center.

Unlike in the opener, Babson would have its chances against Feindel in game two, loading the bases with two outs in the fourth and putting runners at the corners with one away in the fifth. However, the Bears' ace righthander pitched her way out of trouble in both frames and then retired six of the game's final seven batters - including six on strikeouts - to complete the 1-0 victory.

Feindel has allowed just one earned run this season in 92 innings.

Baseball: Bears Salvage Split with Castleton State

Junior Mike Salerno’s RBI double in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie as Coast Guard salvaged a split with a 4-2 win over Castleton State in game two of a doubleheader after the Spartans won the opener 8-5.

Castleton State, an NCAA tournament team last season, scored seven runs in the fifth inning on four hits, four walks and a hit batter. Sophomores Zak Mayoand Cameron Curler each had RBI singles, sophomore Mathew Pause had an RBI double while classmate Ben Schoeneberger had a two-run single in the inning for the Spartans, who led 8-0.

Coast Guard scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the sixth as junior Eddie Kalankiewicz, sophomore Cameron Carroll and sophomore Eric Gerken had three straight RBI singles after sophomore Mike Massaro was walked with the bases loaded cutting the lead to 8-4. Sophomore Ed Sella had a pinch hit sacrifice fly to make the score 8-5.

Junior Tyler Erickson worked six innings and allowed six hits, five runs, all earned while walking just one and striking out nine to pickup the win while senior Seth Harrington allowed a pair of hits in the seventh and fanned a batter to pickup his first save of the season.

Sophomore Curt Barrett (1-1) was solid in his first career start as he worked 4 1/3 innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while walking three and striking out two, but he took the loss. Freshman Dave Wolinski pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Bears allowing four this and an earned run while fanning two.

Sophomore Tyler Babkiewich had two hits in the opener for Coast Guard while Schhoenberger had two hits in the opener for Castleton State.

In game two, senior Jack Lancelin’s RBI single in the fifth gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead before the Bears tied the game in the home half with a leadoff homer by sophomore Jed Daleiden, the first homer of the season for Coast Guard.

In the sixth, Salerno’s RBI double scored Kalankiewicz, who led off with a walk and stole second. Sella added an RBI single to score Salerno giving the Bears a 4-2 lead.

Sophomore Tyler Vieira (1-1) got the win in relief as he pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits and struck out two to pickup his first win of the season.

Sophomore starter James Diddell pitched well for Coast Guard as he went 5 1/3 innings and allowed six hits and a pair of earned runs while walking one and striking out three.

Sophomore Patrick Riley started for Castleton State and went five innings allowing five hits and two earned runs while walking one and fanning two. Senior Matt Greene (0-2) was touched for both runs in the sixth and took the loss.

Coast Guard improves to 8-5 on the season while Castleton State picked up its first win of the season and the Spartans are now 1-8 overall.
