Coast Guard Racks Up Softball Shutouts

Bears defeat Clark, lose to WPI in baseball

The Coast Guard Academy softball team twice blanked Clark University on Saturday, while Worcester Polytechnic Institute dealt the same result to the Bears' baseball team. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Softball: Coast Guard 10, Clark 0; Coast Guard 4, Clark 0

Senior All-American Hayley Feindel, who missed the last 13 games with an injury, returned in style by throwing a pair of shutouts and becoming the NCAA Division III all-time leader in innings pitched as Coast Guard swept Clark 10-0 in five innings and 4-0 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

Feindel now has 905 innings pitched in her career breaking the record of 898 innings set by Megan Soultz of DePauw from 2007-2010.

Coast Guard improves to 16-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play while the Cougars drop to 10-12 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC.

Feindel threw a five hitter in the opener with one walk and six strikeouts before firing a four-hit shutout with two walks and six strikeouts in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Bears scored three in the first and five in the second for an early 8-0 lead. Freshman Jesse Richardson had two hits and three RBI’s while junior Holli Bastinck had two hits and drove in two runs in the 10-0 win.

Game one started out with the Bears scoring three runs on just one hit in the first inning highlighted by a double steal in which Chloe Harmon swiped second and Richardson stole home.

Richardson was back in the middle of Coast Guard’s five run uprising in the second, pushing across two with single down the left field line. Other runs came home on a Stacia Sarwinski sacrifice fly, a Holli Bastinck single and a Harmon double to center.

The Bears scored an unearned run in the third then tacked on the tenth run in the fourth on a Kaitlin Ward single to center.

Clark got a leadoff double from Maureen Coakley in the third but she was stranded there after Feindel retired the next three batters.

The Cougars also had an excellent scoring chance in the fourth, when Erin Murphy singled to short and Tatiana Chunis doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Feindel then got the next three Clark batters out on three consecutive pitches to end the threat.

The seventh was no different as the Cougars got a leadoff base hit by Coakley but Feindel struck out the next three batters – all swinging – to end the game.

Game two saw the Bears grab a 1-0 lead in the third on a Bastinck double to right center. The game stayed that way until Fellman homered to right field off of Clark starter Hayley Buckheit, making the score 2-0.

Coast Guard extended their edge to 3-0 in the sixth when Jaime Kim doubled home Sarwinski, who reached on a base hit of her own to start the frame.

Clark mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of infield singles with two outs, but Feindel managed to get a groundout to end the inning.

Nicole Meuse took the loss in game one for the Cougars, while Buckheit took the defeat in game two.

Bastinck, Fellman and Sarwinski all had three hits in game two, while Coakley and Murphy had two hits each in game one for Clark.

Baseball: WPI 2, Coast Guard 0

Southpaw Eric Johnson hurled seven scoreless innings and Mitch McClune hit an RBI single as WPI beat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 2-0 in NEWMAC baseball action on Friday afternoon at H.L. Rochleau Field on the Assumption campus.

WPI is now 17-8 with a 6-3 mark in the conference standings while Coast Guard drops to 11-14 overall with a 5-7 mark in the NEWMAC.

The game was scoreless through five-and-a-half innings when, in the bottom of the sixth, McClune smashed a two-out single to right field, scoring David Trujillo who had earlier walked and stole second with two outs. On the very next at-bat, Brendan Walsh scored from third on a wild pitch, and the Engineers were suddenly up 2-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, WPI seemed poised to add to that lead when John Flynn singled to right with runners at first and second with two outs. But Coast Guard right fielder Nolan Gallagher made a perfect throw to gun down WPI’s Tim Erlandson at home plate to end the inning.

The Bears were unable to capitalize, however, as Taylor Landry pitched two scoreless innings for his fourth save of the season and Flynn made a diving catch in centerfield in the bottom of the ninth to give WPI the victory.

Johnson struck out three while scattering six hits to keep the Bears off the board. McClune went 3-for-4 on the day with a double in addition to his RBI while Matt Blakeman went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate to lead the Engineers.

For the Bears, Riley Beecher (2-2) totaled six strikeouts in a complete game effort, allowing just two runs. Six Bears each had a hit, with Joe Petry and Cameron Carroll both coming up with doubles. Chris Izurieta, Tyler Babkiewich, Mike Shannon and Gallagher each had a single.

The fast-paced game took only an hour and forty-six minutes, featuring just a pair of errors and two double-plays, one by each team.

The two teams conclude their three-game series today in New London, CT. First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for noon.
