Coast Guard Foundation Hosting Annapolis Sailboat Race

Stonington-based organization will hold the competition in April

The Coast Guard Foundation has announced that it will hold a sailboat race this spring at Annapolis Harbor.

The competition for the Coast Guard Foundation Cup will run overnight between April 27 and 28. The race is managed by the Annapolis Yacht Club and marks the second Coast Guard Foundation Cup race, with sponsorship proceeds benefiting the foundation's efforts to assist Coast Guard families.

“The Coast Guard Foundation Cup is a tremendous opportunity to support the men and women of the Coast Guard, and participate in a great feeder sailing race in Annapolis,” said Jim Muldoon, Coast Guard Foundation and Cup chairman. “It is a fantastic event for sailors to take part in a competitive race and gain experience before the 2013 Annapolis-Newport race later in the year.”

A mandatory skippers' social will be held on April 26 for sailors to pick up information related to the race, including rules and a course map. The race is open to sailboats with "valid PHRF/Chesapeake 4P ratings; J/30, J/35 and J/105 one design classes; and boats with valid CBYRA Multihull ratings."

Huntington Ingalls Inc. and METCOR Inc. are sponsoring the event. Other sponsorships may be made on an individual or company basis.

The non-profit Coast Guard Foundation, which is based in Stonington, was founded in 1969 with the intention of assisting the Coast Guard Academy and its cadets with "academic, athletic, and morale needs" not covered by federal operational funding. The mission of the organization expanded in 1986 to support the "education, welfare and morale" needs of Coast Guard personnel and their families.
