Coast Guard Falls Short Against Babson

Bears tail Beavers in Tuesday baseball game

Babson College defeated the Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday in a conference basketball game. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Freshman Michael Bortolotti allowed eight hits and four unearned runs in seven innings work as Babson clinched at least a tie for the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship with a 9-6 win over Coast Guard.

Babson (21-9, 13-5), playing its final conference game of the season, overcame eight errors and four of the Bears six runs were unearned.

Senior Dave Ahern led off the game with a homer to left before junior Billy Miller doubled and later scored on a ground out by sophomore Chris Kucher for a 2-0 lead.

Coast Guard scored an unearned run in the third and Babson took a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by junior Travis Jonasson in the fourth. The Beavers extended the lead to 4-1 on an RBI single by sophomore Pat Matvichuk in the fifth.

The Bears got one back in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Tyler Babkiewich.

Babson took a 5-2 lead in the sixth as Kucher delivered an RBI single. Coast Guard got two in the home half on an RBI single by Gerken and a throwing error to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Beavers scored three times in the eighth as freshman Chris Warren had an RBI single before back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to pinch hitter sophomore Trevor Boyce and Ahern made the score 8-4.

Coast Guard rallied for two in the eighth on a sac fly by junior Eddie Kalankiewicz and an RBI single by Babkiewich making the score 8-6.

Babson added an insurance run in the ninth as Warren again delivered an RBI single.

Coast Guard opened the ninth with back-to-back singles by sophomore Nolan Gallagher and senior Graham Sherman before sophomore Kyle Lyon got a pop out and a fly ball to left which resulted in Gallagher getting doubled off second to end the game. Lyon wored 1 2/3 innings and allowed three hits to pickup his first save of the season.

Bortolotti worked seven innings and allowed eight hits and four runs, all unearned, while walking two and striking out one to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Sophomore Riley Beecher (2-2) worked the first five innings for Coast Guard and allowed ten hits and four earned runs while walking three and fanning one as he took the loss.

Matvichuk was 4 for 6, Warren had three hits while Ahern, Johasson and Kucher each had two hits as Babson totaled 17 hits in the win.

Gallagher was 4 for 5 for Coast Guard while Gerken and Babkiewich each added two hits as the Bears finsihed with 12 hits.

Coast Guard remains tied for the fourth and final spot in the NEWMAC tournament with three game to go, a three-game series with Springfield this weekend.
