Coast Guard Breaks Out Slaughter Rule On Salve Regina

Bears down Seahawks in softball doubleheader

The Coast Guard Academy turned nearly every hit into a run Sunday as they posted two wins over Salve Regina University. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Sophomore Holli Bastinck was 7 for 8 with a homer, seven RBI’s and five runs scored as Coast Guard, ranked 7th nationally, scored 31 runs on 32 hits in a non-conference doubleheader, sweeping Salve Regina 15-2 and 16-0, both games were stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

In the opener, freshman Devin Fellman and Bastinck were both 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBI’s while senior All-American Amanda Frederick, who became the Bears all-time hits leader last week, blasted a grand slam to highlight a seven-run fourth. Sophomore Catherine Walker added a two-run homer in the win.

Also in the opener, junior Maddie Buchert was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and Frederick had a pair of hits and two runs scored in the win.

Junior Hayley Feindel (26-1) pitched four scoreless innings to run her streak to 41 consecutive scoreless innings while striking out five and not walking a batter to get the win.

Sophomore Jillian Quintana hit a two-run homer off freshman Alex Rennie in the top of the fifth for the two Salve Regina runs. Sophomore Jen Cruver (4-13) went the distance and took the loss.

In game two, Walker was 4 for 4 with three RBI’s while Bastinck and Frederick were both 3 for 4 with Bastinck driving in four runs and Frederick driving in three in the shutout win.

Fellman and junior Jamie Kim each had two hits in the game two win for the Bears, who scored four runs in the first and led 11-0 after two innings.

Feindel worked the first two innings to extend her scoreless innings streak to 43 and she registered three strikeouts to give her 302 on the season. Rennie scattered four hits over the final three innings, walked one and fanned one to pickup her first career win in the nightcap.

Freshman Marissa Simpson went the distance for the Seahawks and took the loss to drop to 5-6 on the season.

Coast Guard runs its win streak to ten and improves to 27-1 overall while Salve Regina drops to 9-19 on the season.
