Coast Guard Bats Ravage Competitors In Florida

Baseball, softball teams sweep to close Florida games

The Coast Guard Academy swept four baseball and softball games on Friday to close out their spring games in Florida. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletics Department:

Baseball: Coast Guard 10, Finlandia 0; Coast Guard 10, Finlandia 2

Sophomore Riley Beecher fired a three-hit shutout in the opener while senior Jesse Karr pitched six solid innings in the nightcap as Coast Guard swept Finlandia University 7-0 and 10-2 at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Beecher allowed just three singles while walking two and striking out seven as he threw his second straight complete game to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore Nolan Gallagher had an RBI ground out while classmate Mike Massaro had an RBI single as the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bears added a run in the second on an RBI ground out by freshman Dave Wolinski for a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Cameron Carroll had an RBI single before junior Nick Peters had a sacrifice fly in the third to give the Bears a 5-0 lead.

The Bears scored two more in the sixth on a two-run single by junior Mike Salerno.

Massaro had three hits in each game going 6 for 8 on the day, all singles, with two RBI’s. Salerno and Gallagher each added a pair of hits in the opener.

In game two, the Bears exploded for six runs in the second on just two hits taking advantage of three walks and a pair of hit batters. Sophomore Ed Sella, who had two hits in game two, sophomore Tyler Babkiewich and Massaro each drove in a run in the inning.

Karr allowed just two hits over the first five inning as the Bears built a 10-0 lead. Karr went six innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs while walking three and fanning five to even his record a 1-1 on the season. Freshman Dave Wolinski pitched a scoreless seventh for the Bears allowing one hit and recording a strikeout.

Gallagher had two more hits including a two-run single in the third inning while Sella also had a pair of hits for the Bears, who won their third straight to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Coast Guard finishes its Spring trip vs. Haverford on Saturday.

Softball: Coast Guard 8, Marietta 0; Coast Guard 1, Wittenberg 0

Junior All-American Hayley Feindel ran her scoreless innings streak to 51 to start the season as she threw two more shutouts and the Bears, ranked 14th nationally, won a pair of wins at the Rebel Games.

Coast Guard improves to a school-record best start of 8-0 having not allowed a run this season with an 8-0 win over Marietta in five innings and a 1-0 win over Wittenberg.

Feindel fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts while walking one in the win over Marietta. Sophomore Holli Bastinck was 3 for 3 while junior Maddie Buchert and freshman Kaitlin Ward each added two hits in the win.

In the second game of the day, sophomore Catherine Walker’s two-out RBI single in the sixth inning accounted for the only run of the day in the win over Wittenberg.

In the sixth, Bastinck singled up the middle with one out. After Bastinck advanced to second on a wild pitch, Walker's delivered an RBI single to right after a nine pitch battle.

Feindel ran her scoreless innings streak to 51 innings, striking out 12, working her way out of a no outs bases loaded situation in the bottom of the 1st inning by striking out three batters in row to end the threat.
