The Coast Guard Academy baseball team defeated Carroll University while the softball team lost games to Trine University and Bridgewater College as the teams continued to play in Florida. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:
Baseball: Coast Guard 12, Carroll 11
Coast Guard rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Carroll 12-11 at the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Bears trailed 11-9 entering the home half of the ninth when junior Tyler Babkiewich led off with double. Junior Nolan Gallagher followed with an RBI single and later came around on an RBI ground out by junior Cameron Carroll to tie the game. Senior Eddie Kalankiewicz drew a one-out bases loaded walk to win the game as Coast Guard came-from-behind to win for the third time in the young season and improve to 3-2 on the year.
In a back and forth game, Carroll led 2-0 in the first before the Bears tied it on a two-run single by senior Chris Izurieta in the home half.
The Bears scored three times in the fourth for a 5-4 lead and then added three more in the fifth to retake the lead 8-7. Babkiewich and Gallagher each had RBI singles in the fifth.
Carroll scored three times in the sixth for a 10-8 lead. Coast Guard got one back in the sixth as freshman Mike Shannon led off with a walk and came around on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 10-9.
Izurieta had two hits and four RBI’s while Kalankiewicz, Babkiewich, Gallagher and junior Joe Petry each added two hits for Coast Guard.
Junior closer Tyler Vieira (2-0) picked up the win in relief as he worked one inning and stuck out a batter before the Bears scored the three runs in the ninth.
Freshman Anthony Martin started and went 3 1/3 innings allowing five hits and a pair of earned runs. Senior Curt Barrett worked 2 1/3 innings of quality relief once again allowing an unearned run and three hits before giving way to Vieira in the ninth.
Coast Guard was not as sharp defensively as they have been all season as the Bears made a season-high seven errors, however junior Eric Gerken and Kalankiewicz each threw out runners from the outfield to kill Carroll rallies.

Softball: Trine 4, Coast Guard 3; Bridgewater 1, Coast Guard 0
Coast Guard, which moved up to 10th in the national rankings on Wednesday morning dropped a pair of games at the Rebel Games.
The Bears lost two games on the same day for the first time since 2008 losing to 4-3 to Trine and 1-0 to Bridgewater of Virginia to drop to 4-2 on the season.
In the opener of the day, the lose to Trine, Sarah Belote's one out home run in the bottom of the 6th provided the winning margin.
Trine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, with the key play being a two out two-run double by pitcher Andi Gasco with the bases loaded. Trine added a third run in the frame on a wild pitch.
In the top of the 4th, Holly Bastinck led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Devin Fellman, and later scored on Chloe Harmon's single to left. The Bears tied the game in the fifth as Erin Lisko led off with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Another Trine error on a Jesse Richardson bunt scored Lisko and set the Bears up with runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs. The next batter Bastinck lined into a double play, as Gasco caught a line drive and doubled up Maddie Buchert at third base. Fellman's RBI double plated Richardson and tied the game 3-3.
In the top of the 6th the Bears stranded Stacia Sarwinski at second after she led off with a double.
The nightcap was a pitcher’s duel as Bridgewater’s Heather Jenkins tossed a one hitter to beat the Bears 1-0.
Melanie Lamb's two out RBI single in the top of the first plated Kasey Anderson, who had reached on an error and later stole second base.
Feindel scattered four hits, walked two and struck out 12 in the second game to drop to 4-2 on the season.
