Bears fail to accumulate any wins in weekend contests

The Coast Guard Academy was unable to earn a win in competitions against Babson College, Curry College, and Springfield College on Saturday. The following information was provided by sports information director Jason Southard:

Football: Curry 44, Coast Guard 21

Sophomore Phil Bigelow carried 21 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns while senior quarterback Anthony Carnevale came off the bench and threw three touchdown passes leading Curry to a 44-21 win over Coast Guard in a non-divisional game between the two New England Football Conference (NEFC) schools.

Coast Guard junior wide receiver Eric Gerken set a single-game school record with 15 receptions in the loss. The old record was 12 held by three players, most recently Rob Bixler vs. Plymouth State in 2002. Gerken finished with a career-high 149 receiving yards in the game.

Bigelow scored the only touchdown of the first quarter on a 17-yard run with 4:32 left in the opening quarter. Freshman Chris Frissore added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Carnavale threw all three of his touchdown passes in the second quarter as the Colonels scored 23 points in the quarter and led 30-0. He threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Tyran Harrigan, a 25-yard strike to senior tight end Ryan Doherty and a nine-yard touchdown to sophomore Scubie Mageza for a 27-0 lead before Frissore booted a 29-yard field goal on the final play of the first half for the 30-0 lead.

Curry finished with 568 yards of total offense, 319 passing and 249 rushing while Coast Guard had 294 yards of total offense, 197 in the air and 97 on the ground.

The Colonels had 387 yards of total offense in the first half, 229 of those in the air while the Bears were held to 72 total yards in the first half.

Coast Guard took advantage of a Curry turnover early in the third quarter as after a fumbled punt, the Bears went 45 yards six plays with Gerken catching a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior Jarrod Owens with 11:07 left in third quarter making the score 30-7.

Curry junior Bruce Vieira’s two-yard run with 7:27 left made the score 37-7 before the Bears answered with a six-yard touchdown run by sophomore Tyler Hames with 42 seconds left in the third quarter making the score 37-14 heading to the fourth quarter.

Bigelow scored from one-yard out before Coast Guard freshman Jake Wawrzyniak scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard run with 59 seconds left to close the scoring.

Carnevale finished 11 of 18 for 139 yards and the three touchdowns while senior Mark Gilson, who started, was 12 of 17 for 180 yards.
Doherty led the Colonels wiht nine receptions for 126 yards while junior Rob Bambini had seven catches for 89 yards.

Owens was 12 of 19 for 115 yards with a touchdown pass while junior Jon Resch was 9 of 15 for 82 yards. Owens also led the Bears with 13 carries for 43 rushing yards.

Curry improves to 2-1 on the season while the Bears drop to 0-2 on the year. Both teams open NEFC divisional play next week as the Colonels travel to MIT on Saturday at 1:00 for the Boyd Division opener and Coast Guard hosts Mass. Maritime on Homecoming in the Bogan Division opener at 1:30.

Men's Soccer: Babson 2, Coast Guard 0

Junior Ayo Iwuagwu and senior Max Walker scored second half goals leading Babson to a 2-0 win over Coast Guard in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.

Iwuagwu broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute with junior Jimmy Stento assisting for the 1-0 lead.

Walker gave the Beavers an insurance goal in the 81st minute as junior Justin LeBlanc assisted to close the scoring.

Senior Peter Crowley made four saves to record his fourth shutout in six games this season as the Beavers improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Freshman Richard Burns and junior Will Leffler each allowed a goal in net for the Bears. Burns made three saves in just under 73 minutes while Leffler did not register save as the Bears dropped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Babson outshot Coast Guard 10-9.

Women's Soccer: Springfield 2, Coast Guard 0

Seniors Katie Mantie and Amber Thorn scored first half goals leading Springfield, ranked 14th nationally, to a 2-0 win over Coast Guard in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.

Mantie scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute while Thorn gave the Pride a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute with sophomore Ashley Carresi assisting.

Junior Erin Greenstein and senior Hanna MacDougall combined to make just one save in goal for the Pride, who improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Coast Guard senior Mary Mills had a season-high 13 saves in net for the Bears, who were outshot 25-2.

The Bears saw their three-game win streak snapped dropping to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play.

Volleyball

Tessa Smolinski spearheaded a collective team effort as Springfield toppled 25th-ranked Coast Guard in four sets in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Pride won by the scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25.

Springfield, which is off to its best start since 2004, now stands at 10-0 on the season, including a 2-0 record in league play. The Bears drop to 6-2, 1-1.

In a rematch of last season's NEWMAC Tournament Championship, Springfield used 20 kills to Smolinski, who hit a smoldering .400 for the match, to control the tempo. Lauren Torvi added 17 kills, while Itza Nieves was terrific on the defensive side of the ball with 21 digs. Molly Giannattasio ran Springfield's offense with 39 assists.

For Coast Guard, Keriann Mason tallied a team-best 19 kills, while Sam Marmolejo anchored the gritty Bears defense with 20 digs. Karen Matic was especially impressive in the loss as she handed out 41 assists, and Kelsey DePorto posted 4.5 blocks.

With the score tied at 15-all in the fourth, head coach Moira Long looked to her bench and went with setter Whitney Miller to direct the Pride down the stretch. The freshman didn't disappoint as she led a late charge, and Smolinski converted on back-to-back kills to give the Pride their 10th-straight victory.

Men's Cross Country

Coast Guard placed four runners in the top 50 to finish seventh of the 34 teams at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.

Trevor Siperek was the top Coast Guard finisher, placing 15th with a time of 25:22.77. Kevin O'Brien was 35th (26:02.12), Gary Ezzo was 41st (26:13.31) while Thomas Heikkinen placed 45th with a time of 26:22.05 for the Bears.

Women's Cross Country

Coast Guard posted a second place finish at the 39th Annual UMass Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational, which ties the teams best finish at this meet in school history.

MIT won the meet with 25 points. The Bears secured the 2nd place finish with 109 points edging out two top 10 ranked schools in the New England Region - #7 Wellesley College (3rd with 114 points) and #10 Brandeis University (4th with 148 points).

Coast Guard placed three runners in the top 20 among a field of over 200 runners. Freshman Beth Gollin was the Bears top finisher securing 8th place running 18:40. Junior Sarah Blatt and freshman Ellie Wu finished next covering the 5k course in 19:14 and 19:17 placing 15th and 19th respectively.

Also in scoring place was sophomore Meghan Kalinowski at 31st with a time of 19:33 and freshman Cameo Ulbricht at 38th finishing in 19:44.

Next Saturday, Coast Guard will travel to Williamstown, Mass. to compete to the Williams College Purple Valley Classic hosted at Mt. Greylock High School.
