Coast Guard wins swimming competition, one of three wrestling matches

The Coast Guard Academy defeated the Merchant Marine Academy in a swim meet on Sunday and won one of three wrestling matches held on the same day. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Swimming and Diving

Johnson Knox and Orlando Morel each won two events leading Coast Guard to a 187-108 win over host and rival Merchant Marine.

Knox won the 100 breaststroke (59.94) and the 50 freestyle (21.90) while Morel captured the 1-meter diving (235.5 points) and the 3-meter event with 188.45 points as the Bears improved to 8-2 on the season.

Marco Tinari won the 1,000 freestyle (9:55.23) and Brian McGuiness won the 100 freestyle (48.01) for Coast Guard while the Bears 200 freestyle relay team of Christian Brindamour, Dan Beshoar, Preston Strobel and McGuiness won in 1:27.61.

In the women's competition, Caitlyn Gever won a pair of individual events and was part of a pair of winning relay teams leading Coast Guard to a 157-131 win over the Merchant Marine.

Gever won both the 50 freestyle (25.64) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.26), Heidi Gayman won the 200 freestyle (1:59.22) and the 500 freestyle (5:24.05), Chantel Ferguson won the 1,000 freestyle (11:16.15) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.84)and Sara Cantrell won the 1-meter board (178.85 points) and the 3-meter board (205.7 points).

Also for the Bears, Sarah Jane Otey won the 100 freestyle (56.37), and Darlene Sao won the 200 IM (2:17.69).

The Bears 200 medley relay team of Gever, Terri Jozsa, Liz Kenis and Otey won with a time of 1:59.62 while the 200 freestyle relay team of Otey, Gever, Christa Funk and Gayman won in 1:45.62.

Nate Giorgio continued his outstanding freshman season with three wins, as Coast Guard went 1-2 at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships at Springfield College.

Coast Guard lost to defending champion Wesleyan 40-7 in the first round. Giorgio won a 13-1 major decision at 125 pounds while Colin Schuster won 5-0 at 157 pounds for the Bears.

Plymouth State beat Coast Guard 29-8 in the second round. Giorgio, the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds in New England, moved up to 133 and recorded a 18-1 win while Mark Howard won a 5-2 decision at 197 pounds.

The Bears beat Norwich 28-22 in the final match of the day and Giorgio started the match off by pinning his opponent in just 1:05 at 125 pounds.

Following a pair of forfeits, his brother Mike won a 12-2 major decision at 149 pounds to cut the deficit to 12-10.

Schuster registered a pin at 157 in just 2:18 to give the Bears the lead for good at 16-12.

Vaughn Gehman won 4-1 at 165 pounds, Nolan Salyer won by forfeit at 174 and Howard won 4-1 at 197 pounds for the Bears.
