Bears participate in several competitions on Saturday

The Coast Guard Academy softball team twice beat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, while the baseball team fell to Springfield College in a doubleheader. The Bears also participated in a track and field meet and defeated Wheaton College in men's tennis. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Softball: Coast Guard 7, MIT 4; Coast Guard 12, MIT 1

Freshman Jesse Richardson was 6 for 6 with five runs scored and senior All-American Hayley Feindel walked just one and struck out 20 to pick up a pair of wins moving into third place on the Division III all-time wins list as Coast Guard swept a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from MIT with a 7-4 win in the opener and a 12-1 five inning win in the nightcap.

Feindel picked up the 113th and 114th wins of her career moving into third place in Division III history ahead of Kelly Schade from Simpson, who had 113 career wins.

Coast Guard improves to 18-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play while MIT drops to 7-18 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

In the opener, junior Stacia Sarwinski’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run fifth inning as the Bears took a 7-0 lead. The Bears opened the scoring in the third on an RBI double by Richardson and an RBI single by junior Holli Bastinck before scoring five times in the fifth.

In the fifth, freshman Chloe Harmon had an RBI double and the Bears also scored a run on an error before Sarwinski’s blast to right field her team-leading sixth of the season.

MIT freshman Ellie Fodor broke up the shutout with a three-run homer to right in the sixth before junior Anna Christensen’s RBI ground out in the seventh scoring senior Jessica Iacobucci, who led off with a single, closed the scoring.

Feindel (10-6) went the distance to get the win in the game one allowing eight hits and four runs, three earned while walking one and striking out 12.

Fodor (4-7) took the loss for MIT as she went 4 1/3 innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, six earned with one walk and three strikeouts.

Richardson was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored while sophomore Kaitlin Ward had two hits in the game one win.

Iacobucci and Christensen each had two hits for the Engineers in the opener.
In game two, sophomore Devin Fellman led off the bottom of the first with her first of two homers in game and the Bears added a pair of runs as Richardson and Bastinck, who both singled came around on wild pitches for a 3-0 lead.

MIT got its run in the second, an unearned run as freshman Karly McLaughlin led off with a single, was bunted to second and scored on an outfield error following a single by Fodor.

The Bears put the game out of reach with seven runs in the third inning. Bastinck and Harmon had RBI singles before sophomore Kaitlin Ward’s RBI double. Fellman hit a two-run shot to left field as the Bears took a 10-1 lead.

Feindel (11-6) allowed four hits and the unearned run while not walking a batter and striking out eight to get the win.

Iacobucci (2-9) worked the first two innings and allowed five hits and five earned runs to take the loss.

Baseball: Springfield 3, Coast Guard 2; Springfield 11, Coast Guard 4

Coast Guard, needing a split to keep its slim chances at a spot in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament alive, was swept 3-2 and 11-4 at Springfield in the Bears final games of the conference season.

Coast Guard, which has lost six of its last seven, drops to 12-19 overall and 6-12 in conference play. The Bears play five non-conference games to end the season including a doubleheader with Mitchell at Dodd Stadium in Norwich at 1 p.m. on April 25th to close out the season.

An RBI-single by Mike McGowan in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Springfield a 3-2 walkoff win in the opener returning the favor as Coast Guard had a walkoff win over the Pride on Friday in game one of the three game series.

In game #1 for the Pride, senior right-hander Greg Marakovits picked up the victory. He gave up just two runs, one earned, and seven hits in the seven-inning complete-game win. He struck out six and walked four along the way.

For the Bears, junior Derek Petty also pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and three runs. He struck out three and walked three.

Each team gave up a run in the second and fourth innings.

Junior catcher Cameron Carroll knocked in the game's first run for Coast Guard.

In the bottom of the second, junior right fielder Kyle DiFranco tied it with a sacrifice fly to center-field.

In the CGA fourth, the Bears took advantage of an overthrow to first by the catcher, allowing a run to score, following a strikeout.

For SC, with one out in the fourth, senior DH Karl Quist doubled to right. DiFranco followed that up with a single to left to tie the score 2-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman shortstop Shane O'Leary led off with a ground-ball single to left. Freshman center-fielder Steve Starr then sacrificed O'Leary to second. After a walk, McGowan, flared a single to left-center, allowing O'Leary to score the winning run.

In game #2, the man who hit the game-winner in the first game was the winning pitcher in the second game. McGowan picked up his first win of the year and is now 1-2. In six innings of work, he allowed four hits and just one run, striking out two and walking none. Freshman Tyler Benoit and senior Adam DeFelice came on to finish up for the Pride.

Junior James Diddell, now 1-2, was the starter and loser for the Bears.

Springfield scored four runs in the second, three in the fifth, and four more in the seventh innings. Coast Guard scored one in the fifth, and added three in the seventh.

Junior catcher Matt Milano led SC with three hits in the nightcap, knocking in six runs, and scoring two more.

Two from CGA had two hits, junior second baseman Tyler Babkiewich and junior right-fielder Nolan Gallagher, who also drove in a pair of runs.

Quist knocked in the game's first run in the second inning. Milano Corletta, and Starr also had RBI singles in that inning.

Milano had a three-run double in the fifth, putting SC in command. Milano added a two-run single in the seventh.

Men's Tennis: Coast Guard 8, Wheaton 1

Coast Guard cruised to an 8-1 win over Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

Coast Guard improves to 8-3 overall and remains perfect in conference play, improving to 3-0 in the NEWMAC.

The Bears won all six singles matches as Greg Mitchell won at #1, Josh Fischer at #2, Nick Martin at #3, Blake Maurer at #4, all winning in straight sets.

John Lightner at #5 singles and Andrew Bryson at #6 singles both won in three sets.

Mitchell and Martin won at #1 doubles while Maurer and Fischer teamed up to win at #2 doubles for the Bears.

Track and Field

Sophomore Adam Scalesse broke the facility and school record in the 100 hurdles and won both the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles while classmate Jordan Lee won the 800 meters and was part of the winning 4x400 relay team to lead the Bears in a home meet with Springfield and WPI.

Springfield won with 161 points, WPI was second with 134 while Coast Guard finished with 105 points.

Adam Scalesse won the 110 hurdles (14.44) which is the second best time in the nation currently and the 400 hurdles (54.86) while Lee won the 800 meters in 1:57.88.

The Bears 4x400 relay team of Kelcey Smith, Ben Wolhaupter, Lee and Joe Kelly won with a time of 3:28.99

Also for Coast Guard, Ben Hannon won the 400 meters (50.01) and Will Baker won the discus (148-01) while Kevin O’Brien was second in the 5,000 meters (15:59.23), Trevor Siperek was second in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:12.26), the fifth best time in the nation, Wolhaupter took second in the pole vault (14-2.75) and Joel MacArthur placed second in the javelin with a throw of 165 feet, eight inches.

In the women's competition, freshman Beth Gollin won the 1,500 meters (4:54.02) and took second in the 800 meters (2:26.01) while sophomore Emily Trudeau won the shot put (37-1.75) and was second in the discus (112-01) to lead the Bears in a home meet with Springfield and WPI.

Springfield won with 148 points, WPI was second with 144 while Coast Guard finished with 94 points.

Also for the Bears, Elizabeth Flint won the triple jump (35-0.25) and Kyle Sutschek won the discus with a toss of 112 feet, eight inches.

Alexa Hunko was second in the shot put (35-4), Moira McNeil was second in the 5,000 meters (20:24.24), Hannah Seeland was third in the hammer (126-06) and Abby Bishop was third in both the 100 hurdles (16.24) and the long jump (15-7.5).
