Baseball team crushes Babson; errors sink softball team

The Coast Guard Academy broke away with a series of runs on Wednesday to defeat Babson College 25-3. The softball team faltered under a series of errors and lost an 8-4 result to Wesleyan University. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Baseball: Coast Guard 25, Babson 3

Coast Guard exploded for 14 runs in the fifth and six innings combined to break open a 4-1 game en route to a 25-3 win over Babson in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard had a season-high 25 runs on 24 hits as ten players hit safely, nine of those having at least two hits as the Bears improved to 11-13 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

The Bears led 4-1 in the fifth when they scored six unearned runs as back-to-back Babson errors following a lead off single by Ed Sella broke open the flood gates. Cameron Carroll had a two-run single in the inning as the Bears took a 10-1 lead.

In the sixth, Coast Guard scored eight runs on six hits while also taking advantage of two more Babson errors which resulted in four unearned runs. Eddie Kalankiewicz had two hits in the sixth, a single and an RBI double and the Bears led 18-1 after six innings.

Coast Guard added five more in the seventh and a pair in the eighth to close the scoring.

Sella was 4 for 5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI’s while Eric Gerken, Tyler Babkiewich and Kalankiewicz each had three hits in the win for the Bears. Gerken and Nolan Gallagher each drove in three runs in the offensive outburst.

Joe Petry, Chris Izurieta, Jacob Boross and Carroll each added two hits for the Bears.

Travis Jonasson was 4 for 4 with a double while Chris Kucher was 3 for 3 for Babson. Trevor Boyce hit a two-run homer to right in the eighth for the Beavers.

Derek Petty (2-3), who received just four runs of support in his first three NEWMAC outings, winning 2-1 and losing a pair of 2-1 games, got plenty of support this afternoon. He went six innings and scattered eight hits while allowing an unearned run walking three and striking out six to get the win.

Babson starter Derek Richards (1-3) allowed ten runs, four earned in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss.

The Beavers drop to 10-10 overall and 6-5 in the NEWMAC.

Softball: Wesleyan 8, Coast Guard 4

Chrissy Bello and Alexis Kral had back-to-back two-run singles to highlight a five run fifth inning leading Wesleyan to a 8-4 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game.

Coast Guard committed a season-high seven errors to drop to 14-10 on the season while Wesleyan improves to 8-10 overall.

Laura Getchell (3-3) went the distance for the Cardinals scattering six hits and allowing four earned runs while walking one and striking out seven to get the win.

Allee Beatty and Tori Reading each had two hits for Wesleyan, which scored twice in the third on three Coast Guard errors to break a 1-1 tie before breaking the game open with five runs in the fifth.

Catherine Walker (7-6) took the loss for the Bears as she allowed eight hits and four earned runs while walking three and striking out three.

Kaitlin Ward had two hits including a double for the Bears while Devin Fellman had the big hit for Coast Guard, a three-run double in the fifth to close the scoring.
