Athletes break records in championship games

Women's Swimming and Diving

Senior Kim Shadwick broke the pool-record in the 1,650 freestyle and captured both the 500 and 1,650 freestyle events for third straight year leading Coast Guard to a program-best third place finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday.

Coast Guard continued to improve its finish at the NEWMAC Championships as the Bears had placed fourth in each of the last two seasons after placing fifth in 2007 and 2008. Coast Guard finished with 446 points behind MIT (917.5) and Springfield (894.5), which had its streak of ten straight championships snapped.

Shadwick’s pool-record time of 17:13.53 in the 1,650 freestyle was also an NCAA “B” cut time. She owns the NEWMAC championship record with a time of 17:13.07 at last year’s championship. Shadwick was the NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year last season.

In the first day of the three-day championship, on Friday, Shadwick won the 500-yard freestyle for the third straight season with her time of 5:00.71, also an NCAA “B” cut time.

The Bears had several other solid performances on Friday as freshman Chantel Ferguson (2:11.50) and classmate Hannah Walden (2:12.68) were third and fourth in the 200 IM. Junior Heidi Gayman was third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.12 and the 400 medley relay team of Shadwick, freshman Alyssa Guminski, Ferguson and Gayman took third by posting a time of 4:00.64.

On Saturday, Gayman won the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 1:53.00 while Shadwick placed second with a time of 1:53.75 to earn All-conference honors and highlight the second day for the Bears. Both were NCAA “B” cut times.

Gayman also placed second in the 100 freestyle for the second straight season on Sunday after winning the event as a freshman. Her time of 52.14 was an NCAA “B” cut time.

Also on Saturday, Walden, junior Sarah Jane Otey, Gayman and Shadwick placed third in the 800 free relay with an NCAA “B” cut time of 7:41.31.

The Bears 400 freestyle relay team of Otey, Walden, Shadwick and Gayman placed third with an NCAA “B” cut time of 3:30.56 in the final event of the championship.

First and second place finishers in each event earn All-conference honors.

Senior Carl Luxhoj set a new school record in the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, five inches at the Division III New England Championship at Springfield College on Saturday.

The previous record, 47 feet, 0.75 inches was held by Mike Moore set in 1976.

Luxhoj finished 3rd In the triple jump and 6th in the long jump earning All-New England honors.

Also earning All-New England honors for the Bears were senior Jordan Kellam, who placed third in the pole vault (14 feet, 5.25 inches) and senior John Jaskot, who placed fifth in the high jump (6-4).

Coast Guard finished 12th with 19 points.

In the women's Division III New England Championships at the Massachusetts Insitute of Technology, freshman Abby Bishop finished 10th overall in the pentathlon with 2706 points.

Bishop's total score broke her own record of 2516 points set two weeks ago at the Tufts Invitational.

Abby's performances included 9.45 seconds in the 55 hurdles, 23 feet, 1.75 inches in the shot put, 4 feet, 6.25 inches in the high jump, 16 feet, 1.5 inches in the long jump.

Emily Trudeau was the top Coast Guard finisher as she placed 13th in the shot put. Trudeau had a career-best throw of 35 feet, 6.75 inches.

Also for the Bears, Sarah Blatt was 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:26.66, Elizabeth Flint finished 15th in the triple jump with a best marks of 33 feet, 7.5 inches.

Coast Guard's 4-by-800 meter relay with Blatt, Kalinowski, Jill Kelly, and Alainna Kiskaddon finished in 16th place with a time of 10:21.49

Men's Tennis

Coast Guard lost 9-0 to nationally ranked Vassar on Saturday.

Josh Fischer was the only Bear to win a set as he lost at #4 singles after winning the first set 6-4, he lost 7-6 (7-5) and 10-5.

Coast Guard drops to 5-3 overall.
