Men win swimming and diving meet

The men's swimming and diving team once again posted a victory for the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, while the Bears fell short in other competitions. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletics Department:

Men's Basketball: Clark 61, Coast Guard 49

Junior Bryan Vayda led Clark’s balanced scoring attack with 14 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds the Cougars used an 11-2 second half spurt to beat Coast Guard 61-49 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Clark won its second straight to improve to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard suffered its fourth straight loss and drops to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

Coast Guard made its first and only 3-pointer of the game, after missing its first eight, when sophomore Ed Gailor connected with 11:05 left which started a 7-0 spurt as the Bears pulled to with one at 36-35 with 9:10 left.

Clark then used its 11-2 run capped on a pair of free throws by freshman Jake Gubitose with 7:13 left for a 47-37 edge and controlled play down the stretch for the win.

Junior D.J Bailey added 13 points while junior Mitch Renshaw and sophomore Travis Curley each added 11 points for Clark.

Senior Jevon James registered his sixth double-double of the season as he led Coast Guard with 21 points and 14 rebounds while freshman Kevin Sowers was also in double figures for the Bears with 11 points.
Freshman Devonte Weems had a career-high ten rebounds for Coast Guard.

Clark shot 43.8 percent from the floor (21-48) while making four of 11 from 3-point range. The Bears shot just 32.6 percent (15-46) and made just one of nine from behind the arc.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, Coast Guard led 9-3 with 12:47 left in the first half before Clark scored seven straight capped on a bucket by junior Brian Vayda for a 10-9 lead with 10:57 left in the opening stanza.

Clark used a 9-2 spurt to end the first half turning a 19-19 tie with a 4:01 left into a 28-21 lead at halftime.

Coast Guard struggled in the first half shooting just 27.3 percent from the floor (6-22), and 56.3 percent from the foul line (9-16) while missing all seven 3-point attempts.

Women's Basketball: Smith 58, Coast Guard 43

Smith dominated the glass enroute to a 58-43 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Ashani Petrizzi, making her first career start, tied her career high with 10 boards, while Ellie Giles grabbed 11 rebounds, the second most by a Smith player in a game this season as the Pioneers (11-9, 8-6 NEWMAC) outrebounded the Bears (2-17, 0-13 NEWMAC) 41-23, including a 22-4 effort on the offensive end.

It was all Smith in the early going, as the Pioneers jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead on Amanda Zakoske's short range jumper with 15:06 left in the first half. Smith continued to pour it on, extending the advantage out to 20-5 thanks to a three pointer from Jessica Welk, followed by Libby Dutton's slashing layup.

The Bears would not go quietly, closing the half with a 12-5 run in the final 6:07. Sophomore Ashley Elizondo hit a pair of free throws to get the Bears within 22-10, and freshman Kaitlin Ward hit a three and a jumper on consecutive possessions that cut the lead to 25-17 at halftime.

Coast Guard continued to chip away in the second half, getting a basket from Ward that trimmed the deficit to 31-24 with 17:11 to play, and though Smith went back up by 11 on Giles' basket with 12:30 remaining, Coast Guard pulled within eight (41-33) at the 9:13 mark when Ward set up freshman Larla Brown for a jumper. That kick-started a 10-5 Coast Guard spurt that was capped when senior Allison Majcher's layup cut the Smith lead to 46-43 with 5:45 left in the game.

After a Coast Guard timeout, Rosa Drummond boosted the lead back to six with a conventional three point play, and Smith limited the Bears to five points down the stretch. Meanwhile, Smith pulled away at the foul line, as Drummond (4-5) and Devon Quattrocchi salted away the victory and Abby Dornbusch's first career basket set the final margin.

Drummond led all scorers with 15 points, as every Pioneer who got into the game scored. Brown led Coast Guard with 11 points, and Elizondo had a career-high ten.

Men's Swimming and Diving

Senior Mike Carman and junior Brian McGuiness each won a pair of events as Coast Guard easily beat Wesleyan 192.5-75.5 in the final dual meet of the season.

Carman won both the 100 breaststroke (1:00.50) and the 200 breaststroke (2:09.46) while McGuiness captured both the 100 freestyle (48.20) and the 200 freestyle (1:45.16).

Eight other Bears won individual events as freshman Marco Tinari won the 1,000 freestyle (9:56.25), junior Bryan Andrews won the 100 backstroke (55.84), junior Johnson Knox won the 50 freestyle (21.66), freshman Barrett Johannsen won the 200 backstroke (2:03.85), sophomore Tanner Armstrong won the 500 freestyle (4:50.82) and senior Dan Alley won the 100 butterfly in 52.50.

Junior Jeff Mistrick won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 189.37 while junior Orlando Morel won the 3-meter event with 230.40 points.

The Bears 200 medley relay team of Andrews, Matt Odom, Alley and Knox also win with a time of 1:38.06 as the team finished the dual meet portion of the season with a 9-1 record.

Women's Swimming and Diving

Coast Guard won just two events in a 206-93 loss to Wesleyan in the final dual meet of the season.

Senior Kim Shadwick won the 500 freestyle in 5:18.83 while freshman Hannah Walden won the 400 IM with a time of 4:49.51.

Shadwick also placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.13) for the Bears, who finished 4-6 in dual meets this season.

Men's Indoor Track

Senior Carl Luxhoj was Coast Guard's top finisher placing second in the long jump (21' 8") and triple jump (47' 0.25") at the Tufts Invitational.

Luxhoj's mark in the triple jump was good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

In other field events, John Jaskot placed fourth in the high jump (6' 1.25), Kemron Beache was eighth in the shot put (43' 9.25"), and Devin Adams finished third in the weight throw (51' 7.75").

In the running events, Trevor Siperek was Coast Guard's top finisher placing second in the 3000 meters crossing the finish in 8:56.35. Kyle Coleman and Jordan Lee placed fourth and seventh in the 600 meters finishing in 1:24.46 and 1:25.06 respectively.

Also in the running events Kevin O'Brien was fifth in the 5000 meters(15:42.66), Gary Ezzo was sevebth in the 3000 meters (9:03.26).

Other top eight finishers were Adam Scalesse in the 60 meter hurdles (8th place - 8.81) and Tieran Bonner in the 60 meter dash (5th place).

Women's Indoor Track

Senior Alainna Kiskaddon was Coast Guard's top finisher placing 4th in the 400 meters running 1:02.32 at the Tufts Invitational.

Another top finisher for the Bears was freshman Megan Kalinowski in the 3000 meters finishing 5th running 10:57.79. Sophomore Sarah Blatt was 9th in the 800 meters crossing the finish in 2:27:74.

In the field events, freshman Liz Flint was Coast Guard's top finisher as she placed 5th in the triple jump with a best mark of 34 feet 6.75 inchs.

In the throwing events, freshman Emily Trudeau finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 4.5 inches.
