Babson defeats women's basketball team, both indoor track teams place eighth in invitational

Babson College took a women's basketball game with twice the point total of the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, while both indoor track teams placed eighth out of nine teams at an invitational. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Women's Basketball: Babson 96, Coast Guard 47

Freshman Erin Young came off the bench and was eight for ten from 3-point range finishing with a career-high 28 points in just 21 minutes leading Babson, ranked 20th nationally, to a 96-47 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Babson has now won 55 straight NEWMAC games and the Beavers improved to 14-2 overall and 10-0 in conference play while Coast Guard dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-9 in the NEWMAC.

Young was four for five from behind the arc in each half scoring 14 points per period and finishing nine for 11 from the floor.

Senior Nicki Wurdeman added 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals, junior Sarah Collins had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals while senior Kathleen King finished with 12 points, and a game-high 13 rebounds to go with four assists and three steals for the Beavers, who have won six straight.

Babson scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back. The Beavers led 48-19 at halftime. Babson shot 46.8 percent from the floor in the game (36-77) while hitting nine of 16 from 3-point range (56.3 percent).

Coast Guard shot just 30.4 percent (17-56) and made just two of ten from behind the arc.

Freshman Dani Knox led Coast Guard with 12 points to go with four rebounds while classmate Jamie Waterman added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Babson outrebounded the Bears 49-34.

Indoor Track

Bryan Ayotte placed sixth in the shot put and qualified for the Division III New England Championship at the nine-team Springfield Invitational.

Ayotte recorded a throw of 44 feet, five inches. Ben Wolhaupter was sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet, 1.5 inches.

Joe Kelly was seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 53.27 while Adam Scalesse, who only ran in the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles, due to an injury, registered a time of 8.35 seconds, which ranks him eighth in the nation at the Division III level.

The Bears had some solid performances from their relay teams as the 4x800 team of Trevor Siperek, Trevor Auth, James Martin, and Jordan Lee placed third with a time of 8:26.29, the 4x400 team of Kelcey Smith, Ryan Hub, Ben Hannon, and Joe Kelly finished fourth in 3:32.69 while the 4x200 team of Smith, Erick Jackson, Rian Bareuther, and Hannon were fourth with a time of 1:37.98.

Coast Guard placed eighth of the nine teams in the men's competition.

In the women's competition, Hannah Seeland and Liz Flint were the top Coast Guard finishers as they each placed sixth and the Bears finished eighth out of nine teams.

Seeland had career-best throw of 35 feet, 8.75 inches in the shot put while Flint had a leap of 34 feet, 5.75 inches in the triple jump.

Also for the Bears, Gina Caylor was eighth in the pole vault (9-6.25), Abby Bishop was tenth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.99), Emily Trudeau was 12th in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 10.62 inches while Meghan Kalinowski was 14th in the mile with a time of 5:36.27.
