Baseball clinches spot in NEWMAC finals; softball racks up 29 runs against MIT

The Coast Guard Academy shattered the competition in baseball and softball on Saturday. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Baseball: Coast Guard 3, Springfield 2; Coast Guard 6, Springfield 2

Coast Guard used a pair of solid pitching outings from senior Jesse Karr and sophomore Derek Petty to sweep Springfield College 3-2 and 6-2 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader, the final conference games of the season.

The Bears clinched the fourth and final spot in the NEWMAC tournament with the game one win. Coast Guard is now 19-13 overall and finished 9-9 in conference play. It is just the second time in the 13 years of the NEWMAC that Coast Guard finished .500 or better in conference play. The fourth-seeded Bears will open NEWMAC tournament play at top-seeded Wheaton on Wednesday.

Springfield drops to 10-19 overall and 4-14 in conference play.

The Pride led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning of the seven inning opening game as senior Michael Micik had an RBI single in the first and freshman Frank Calabrese added a sac fly in the sixth.

Coast Guard scored three times in the home half of the sixth as sophomore Tyler Babkiewich’s two-run double tied the game and he scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Mike Salerno. Sophomore Eric Gerken doubled to lead off the inning before junior Eddie Kalankiewicz singled and moved to second on an error to set the stage for Babkiewich.

Junior Greg Marakovits had allowed just three hits through the first five innings before being touched for three runs and four hits in the sixth. He took the loss to drop to 1-3 on the season.

Karr (4-3) scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run while walking three and striking out three to get the win. Sophomore Tyler Vieira pitched the seventh, allowing just a walk, to pickup his seventh save of the season.

Gerken, Kalankiewicz and Babkiewich each had two hits in the win while John Schmaltz had a pair of hits for Springfield.

In game two, Springfield again took a 2-0 lead as the Pride got a run in the second on an RBI ground out by Calabrese and an RBI single by classmate Mike McGowan in the third.

Sophomore Mike Massaro ripped three-run double in the right field gap in the third to give the Bears the lead for good. Senior Graham Sherman delivered an RBI double in the fifth for a 4-2 lead before Massaro and sophomore Cameron Carroll had RBI singles in the seventh to close the scoring.

Petty (4-3) allowed seven hits and two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out five to get the wine. Sophomore Curt Barrett pitched the final inning to record the first save of his career.

Freshman Alex Williams (1-3) took the loss for Springfield. He went four innings and allowed five hits and four runs, all earned while walking three and fanning four.

Massaro was three for four in the game two win while Kalankiewicz and Babkiewich each had two more hits to finish the day with four hits apiece. Sherman also had two hits for the Bears.

McGowan and junior Mike Corletta had a pair of hits for Springfield in the second game.

Softball: Coast Guard 14, MIT 0; Coast Guard 15, MIT 0

The No. 4 ranked Coast Guard Academy softball team erupted for 29 runs while starting pitcher, Hayley Feindel, ran her streak of consecutive innings without allowing a run to 65, as the Bears downed swept host MIT, 14-0 and 15-1 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader as the Bears clinched their third straight NEWMAC regular season championship.

The Bears (31-1, 15-1 NEWMAC) jumped out to an early lead in Game One, striking for three unearned runs in the top of the first. After back-to-back Tech errors, Catherine Walker picked up two of her three RBI’s with a double into the right-centerfield gap. Three straight doubles by Amanda Frederick, Holly Bastnick and Walker led to four more runs for Coast Guard in the second. Frederick would also add a solo shot in the fifth, as part of a three-for-four afternoon.

The Cardinal and Gray had a pair of chances to snap Feindel’s lengthy scoreless innings streak, loading the bases in the first and putting a runner on third in the third inning. Jessica Oleinik picked up a two-out walk, followed by a single by Keri Dixon. Jenny Li reached on an error by the shortstop but Feindel got Anna Christensen to pop up to end the threat. Jessica Iacobucci led off the third with a base hit, advancing two bases on an error by the rightfielder, but Feindel escaped the jam once again with a pair of strikeouts. The junior All-American allowed just two hits in the first game while striking out 10 Tech hitters.

The Coast Guard bats picked up where they left off in Game two, striking for eight runs in the second inning en route to the 15-1 win. The first five batters reached base and scored as 12 Bears would come to the plate in the inning. Walker drove in three more runs with a double in her second plate appearance of the stanza. A pair of home runs in the third, by Kaitlin Ward and Devin Fellman, led to three more runs for Coast Guard.

Keri Dixon plated the lone Tech run of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, bringing home Iacobucci.

Fellman was 7-of-9 on the afternoon with nine RBI and four runs scored. Walker had four doubles while driving in six runs. Feindel, who leads the nation with 30 wins and 343 strikeouts, earned the win in both games, striking out 16 while allowing just two hits and one walk in eight innings of work.

The Engineers see their season come to an end at 5-20 overall but tied the program record for conference wins, finishing at 4-12 in the NEWMAC, their best ledger in league play since 2002. The Bears captured the outright NEWMAC regular season title and will look to repeat as Tournament Champions beginning on Wednesday, April 20 against an opponent to be determined.

Men's Outdoor Track

Tieran Bonner won both the 100 meters (11.64) and the 200 meters (23.28) as the Bears placed second at a tri-meet with WPI and host Springfield.

Adam Scalesse won the 100 hurdles (15.44) and took second in the 400 hurdles (56.15) while Carl Luxhoj won the triple jump (47-11) and took second in the long jump (23-1.25).

Also for the Bears, Kyle Coleman won the 400 hurdles (56.15), Will Baker won the discus (137-1) and Ben Wolhaupter won the pole vault (13-9).

Springfield won the meet with 185.5 points while Coast Guard was second with 125.5 points and WPI was third with 94 points.

Trevor Siperek was second in the 1,500 meters (4:11.27), Jordan Lee won the 800 meters (2:01.82) while Devin Adams was second in the hammer (159-1) for Coast Guard.

Women's Outdoor Track

Emily Trudeau won the discus as the Bears placed third in a tri-meet with WPI and host Springfield.

Trudeau won the discus with a toss of 101 feet, 11 inches and she also placed second in the shot put (34-7) while Alexa Hunko was third (33-11.50).

Kim Kopcak took second in the discus (99-3), Alaina Kiskaddon placed second in the 400 hurdles (1:10.31) and Gina Caylor was second in the pole vault (9-6.25) for the Bears.

Springfield won with 202 points, WPI was second with 103 points while Coast Guard finished with 56 points.

Men's Tennis: Wheaton 5, Coast Guard 4

Blake Maurer and Chris Hoffman won their singles matches and teamed up for a doubles victory, but Wheaton beat Coast Guard 5-4 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

Hoffman won at #3 doubles 7-5, 6-2 while Maurer won at #5 singles 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. The duo also won 8-2 at #2 doubles.

Also winning for the Bears as Josh Fisher at #4 singles by scores of 6-0, 6-1.

The Bears drop to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
