Bears lose women's soccer game in double overtime

The Coast Guard Academy dropped a women's soccer game to Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday after the fight went into double overtime. On the volleyball court, however, the Bears posted a win against the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Women's Soccer: Mount Holyoke 3, Coast Guard 2

Senior Mary Cooke scored with 7:57 left in the second overtime as Mount Holyoke snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

The Lyons improve to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Coast Guard extends its winless streak to four and drops to 4-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.

Freshman Hannah Yee scored a pair of headers off corner kicks in the 16th and 23rd minutes to give the Lyons a 2-0 lead. Junior Mallory Phaneuf assisted on both Yee goals for Mount Holyoke.

Coast Guard cut the deficit in half when freshman Lindsay Duplessis scored just 1:11 later with senior Brittany Fifer assisting.

The Bears tied the game on a goal by sophomore Jill Kelly in the 31st minute with senior Shannah Shelton adding her school-record tying 15th assist of her career. Shelton tied the mark of 15 held by Olivia Grant (2000-’03).

Freshman Mackenzie Randall made 15 saves to record her first collegiate win in goal for the Lyons.

Senior Mary Mills made seven saves in the loss for the Bears.

Coast Guard outshot Mount Holyoke 23-12.

Volleyball: Coast Guard 3, WPI 1

Junior Catherine Walker had nine kills, six digs and a pair of aces leading a balanced Coast Guard attack as the Bears snapped WPI’s winning streak at eight with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-17) win in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

Coast Guard started off fast scoring the first seven points in the first game behind the serving of freshman Kelsey Hickle and increased the lead to 15-2. WPI would get as close as ten on four different occasions the last being 18-8 before the Bears scored seven of the final ten points for the 25-11 win.

The second game started the exact same way as the Bears raced out to a 7-0 lead, this time behind the serving of sophomore Sam Marmolejo. WPI fought back cutting the lead to 10-6 and trailed 13-11 before Coast Guard ran off 12 for the next 15 to win the game 25-14.

The Bears scored the first four points in the third game and pushed that to nine at 15-6. WPI would get as close as six at 16-10, but Coast Guard closed out the match with a 25-17 win.

Junior Keriann Mason added six kills and seven digs while junior Karen Matic had six kills and a team-high 19 assists.

Also for the Bears, sophomore Sam Marmolejo had 12 digs and three aces, freshman Elise Sako added ten assists while Hickle had a team-high four aces in the win as Coast Guard improved to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Junior Elyssa Dorenfeld led WPI with seven kills to go with nine digs while classmate Kerrin Beovich also had seven kills for the Engineers, who drop to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Joan Porambo led WPI with 12 digs while junior Alex Rangel had a team-high 11 assists in the loss.
