Bears split baseball doubleheader; softball racks up more wins

The Coast Guard Academy baseball team split a doubleheader with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while the softball team continued a winning streak with two triumphs over Smith College. The men's track and field team also triumphed in their own invitational. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Atheltic Department:

Baseball: MIT 8, Coast Guard 3; Coast Guard 6, MIT 0

Sophomore Nate Toll twirled a two-hit shutout as Coast Guard beat MIT 6-0 in game two of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader after MIT won the opener 8-3.

Toll allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out six to pickup his team-high fourth win and and first shutout to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Sophomore Eric Gerken’s three-run triple highlighted a four-run second inning while junior Eddie Kalankiewicz and sophomore Cameron Carroll had back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh for the Bears. Gerken and Kalankiewicz each had a pair of hits in the win for Coast Guard.

In the opener, Aric Dama allowed just one hit over six innings and MIT led 8-0 before the Bears scored all three runs in the seventh of the seven inning game.

Sophomore Riley Beecher (2-1) worked five innings and allowed six earned runs to take the loss for Coast Guard, his first of the season.

MIT is now 14-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play while Coast Guard is 14-9 overall and 4-5 in NEWMAC action.

Softball: Coast Guard 5, Smith 0; Coast Guard 17, Smith 1

Coast Guard, ranked 10th nationally improved to 23-1 overall and 9-1 in NEWMAC play with a sweep of Smith 5-0 and 17-1 in five innings.

In the opener, the Bears scored all the runs they would need in the top of the second, with Devin Fellman driving in two runs with a single up the middle that scored Stacia Sarwinski and Catherine Walker.

Hayley Feindel struck out seven for Coast Guard and got the win.

In the nightcap, the Bears scored 10 runs over the first two innings in a 17-1 victory.

Men's Outdoor Track

Adam Scalesse and Kyle Coleman took first and second in the 400 hurdles in 55.25 and 55.81 respectively as the Bears won the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday.

Scalesse also took first in the 110 hurdles finishing in 15.33. Tieran Bonner was the winner of the 200 dash, running 22.91, and also placed third in the 100 dash with a time of 11.48.

Carl Luxhoj won the long jump with a mark of 6.81m (22’ 4.25”) and finished 13.85m (45’ 5.25”) in the triple jump.

Also in the jumping events, John Jaskot won the high jump clearing 1.86m (6 feet, 1.25 inches) while Jordan Kellam won the pole vault with a personal record mark of 4.57 (15’).

Trevor Siperek took first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:35.91. Kevin O’Brien placed second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:54.73.

Kyle Coleman, Bret Morris, Carl Luxhoj, and Josh Wofford ran a season best time of 3:28.52 in the 4 x 400m relay placing second.

In the throwing events, Devin Adams won the hammer throw with a best mark of 44.96m (147’ 6”), while teammate Pat Page placed second throwing 44.54m (146’ 1”). Sophomore Will Baker took second place in the discus throw with a toss of 43.61 (143’ 1”).

Coast Guard won the meet scoring 204 points, Westfield State 178, Trinity 89, Wesleyan 60, RIC 49, ECSU 37, Roger Williams 31, Conn College 29, USMMA 25, New Haven 22, Babson 8.
