Bears take silver in NEWMAC swimming championship

The Coast Guard Academy came in second in a NEWMAC swimming championship this weekend while three wrestlers received All-New England honors. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department.

Swimming and Diving

Coast Guard finished second for the third straight season at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship hosted by MIT.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a two-time defending champion, easily won with 1,153 points while Coast Guard took second with 822 points, well ahead of third place Springfield's 540 points.

The Bears 200 freestyle relay team of Brian McGuiness, Johnson Knox, Dan Alley and Dan Beshoar posted a winning time of 1:23.90 for Coast Guard’s only first place finish.

Freshman Marco Tinari (16:02.45) and sophomore Nick Poehler (16:06.13) placed second and third in the 1,650 freestyle both posting NCAA “B” cut times.

Junior Mike Carman placed second in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA “B” cut time of 2:06.16.

Junior Nick Cosenza placed second in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:35.29 while Poehler also posted an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:36.07 and placed third.

Knox placed second in the 50 freestyle also posting an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.98 while Andrews, Carman, Alley and Knox took second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:27.49.

Brett Gayman, Eric Bonomi, Barrett Johannsen and Preston Stroebel placed second in the 400 freestyle relay by posting a time of 3:05.66.

First and second place finishers earn All-conference honors.

Wrestling

Senior Andy Snyder was one of three Bears to earn All-New England honors as he placed second at 157 pounds at the Division III New England Wrestling Association Championships.

Snyder won his first match with a pin in just 39 seconds and then won 6-2 and 2-1 to earn a berth in the winners bracket final, where he lost to Mike Willey from Plymouth State 4-2. The senior, who earned All-New England honors for the first time in his career, then won with a pin in 4:36 to earn a rematch with Willey in the championship match.

Willey edged Snyder 4-3 in double overtime the championship match. Snyder finished with a record of 35-9 this season.

A pair of freshmen had outstanding performances at their first New England Championship as Josh Gerry at 133 pounds and Luke Taylor at 165 pounds each placed fourth to earn All-New England honors.

Gerry lost his first match 2-1 before winning 2-1, 5-4 and then 12-4 before getting pinned in 3:42. Gerry finishes his tremendous season with a record of 19-8 on the season.

Taylor won his first two matches easily 12-1 and then 15-0 before a 13-1 loss sent him to the losers bracket. He won 16-2 in the losers bracket before getting pinned in 1:11 to finish fourth. Taylor finished the season 16-14.

The Bears placed 10th of the 14 teams with 42 points. Springfield won with 141 points.
