Coast Guard Academy Places Third In NEWMAC Running Championship

Top finishers place eighth in women's, tenth in men's

Both of the Coast Guard Academy's cross country running teams earned third place team finishes at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference on Monday. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Coast Guard had a trio of runners earn All-conference honors as the Bears placed third at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship at Franklin Park.

Senior Trevor Siperek was the top Coast Guard finisher as he placed tenth with a time of 26:33 over the 8K course to earn All-conference honors for the second straight season. The top 14 finishers earn All-conference honors.

Sophomore Gary Ezzo was 11th with a time of 26:43 earning All-conference honors for the first time in his career.

Senior Joe Hill placed 14th to earn All-conference honors for the first time in his career as he crossed the finish line with a time of 26:57.

Senior Kevin O’Brien just missed earning his third straight All-conference honor as he placed 15th with a time of 26:59.

MIT took the top three spots and four of the top five places to win the NEWMAC championship for the 14th straight season while Springfield placed second. MIT had 19 points, Springfield finished with 44 points while the Bears had 75 points.

In the women's competition, freshman Beth Gollin placed eighth overall and Coast Guard placed five runners in top 40 to finish third.

Gollin, who has been the top Coast Guard finisher in every race this season, finished the 5K course in 19:15 to earn All-conference honors which go to the top 14 finishers.

Junior Sarah Blatt was 19th overall in 19:54, sophomore Meghan Kalinowski was 29th with a time of 20.27.

Also for the Bears, freshman Ellie Wu was 35th in 20:38 while classmate Cameo Ulbricht finished 37th with a time 20:40.

MIT won its fifth straight NEWMAC Championship as the Engineers finished with 22 points, Wellesley was second with 50 points while the Bears had 102 points to place third. Coast Guard had placed fourth in each of the last two seasons.
