Camels Surge To Defeat Williams

Connecticut College trailed 3-0 early in Saturday's men's lacrosse game but came back to defeat Williams College 11-8 in a game at Johns Hopkins University. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

The Camels improved their record to 2-3 and are 1-3 in NESCAC play. Williams slips to 0-4 with a 0-3 mark in conference action.

Chad Sawyer (Northfield, Ill.) scored four goals and Briggs Barton (Rye, N.Y.) added three scores to lead the Camels on the offensive side of the ball. Junior midfielder John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) dished out three assists.

Senior net-minder Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) made 12 of his 13 saves in the final three quarters of action to rally the Camels. Moccia made five saves during a critical stretch of play in the second quarter and had two ground balls in the triumph.

Senior Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won 13-of-23 face-offs, finishing with a goal and six ground balls for Connecticut College. Michael Keane (Bellmore, N.Y.) chipped in with six ground balls while senior defensive midfielder Michael O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Williams College senior attack Sam Hargrove (Wallingford, Pa.) tallied five points on the afternoon with four goals and one assist. Evan Dominicis (Greenville, Del.) scored three goals with one assist and four ground balls.

David Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) won 8-of-16 face-offs and freshman Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, N.Y.) made five saves in the cage.

Williams raced out to a 3-0 lead when Dedominicis found the back of the net with 5:29 remaining in the first quarter and things were not looking great for Camel Nation.

But with 1:11 remaining in the first, Tyler Corcoran (Simsbury, Conn.) got the Camels on the board with his second goal of the season and Williams had a 3-1 lead after one period of action.

Barton scored the next goal but Hargrove answered for the Ephs with 8:20 remaining in the half and Williams had regained its two goal advantage in a 4-2 game.

After that point it was all Camels. Lyons assisted Sawyer for the next two goals coming just 28 seconds apart. With 1:04 remaining, Danny Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) put the Camels on top for good and the hosts carried the 5-4 advantage into the break.

In the second stanza, the offensive assault was on. Sawyer scored the first two goals in the quarter and Barton added the next two scores. Chuck Czerkawski put in an unassisted tally before JR Hartgers (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) closed out the 9-0 run to put the Camels in complete control with an 11-4 lead and 7:31 remaining in the contest.

Williams scored the final four goals of regulation but it was not enough as the Camels held on for the 11-8 victory.

Williams out-shot the Camels 45-to-26 in the contest and held a slim 37-to-34 edge in ground balls.

Williams will visit Washington & Lee University Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. game. Connecticut College will host Trinity on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. home game.
