Camels Post Swimming, Hockey Wins

Women score three goals in second period

The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team potted three goals in the second period to come away with a 4-3 win over Bowdoin College on Sunday. The men and women of the swimming and diving team returned from a New Haven visit with a victory over Southern Connecticut State University. The following information was provided by the Connecticut College Athletic Department:

Women's Ice Hockey: Connecticut College 4, Bowdoin College 3

The Connecticut College women's hockey team scored goals 53 seconds apart from each other in the second period to take the lead for good in a 4-3 NESCAC victory against Bowdoin College Sunday afternoon.

With their second straight victory, the Camels improved to 7-7 with a 5-5 mark in league play, while the Polar Bears fall to 8-5-1 (5-3 NESCAC).

Sam Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) scored the equalizer with 16:18 remaining in the second and Courtney Dumont (Lewiston, Maine) potted her 10th goal of the season to put the Camels on top 3-2 at 4:35 in the second.

Samantha Shuffenecker (Oswego, N.Y.) and Kelsey Kirker (Milton, Vt.) tallied scores for the winning side. Ashleigh Kowtoniuk (Johnstown, Pa.) distributed two assists for the Camels and Amy Leichliter (Westchester, Pa.) stopped 33 shots for the hosts.

Kim Tess-Wanat (Fon du Lac, Wis.), Emily Tang (Cambridge, Mass.), and Dominique Lozzi (Reading, Mass.) scored goals for the visitors.

Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn.) made 11 saves in one period of play and was relieved by Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn.), who stopped 20 shots for the visitors.

Dumont was able to keep the puck on her backhand and skate through a pair of defenders for the goal that put the Camels on top in the second. Later on with7:26 remaining, Kowtoniuk led Kirker out on a break for a one-on-one situation and the senior forward went top shelf for the goal that proved to be the difference in the contest. The Camels out-shot the Polar Bears 18-to-9 in the second period.

Lozzi pulled the Polar Bears to within one with 12:01 to go. But Leichliter made 15 of her saves in the third to protect the lead and the hosts were able to hold on for their second straight win.

The Polar Bears will host Wesleyan University Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. game in Brunswick, Maine.

The Camels will be seeking their third straight win when they host the UMass Boston Beacons Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. game in New London.

Swimming and Diving

The Connecticut College swimming and diving teams visited Southern Connecticut State University for a dual meet Sunday afternoon. The Camel men (5-3) defeated SCSU; the 21st ranked teams in Division II by a count of 147-132, while the women (7-1) earned a 151-144 win against the Owls.

Ryan Dignan (Phoeniz, Ariz.) had another big day and set a school record in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.82. Dignan notched victories in both 200 yard free and 200 yard individual medley with respective times of 1:43.62 and 1:59.14.

Sam Gill (Springfield, Ill.) scored three wins, triumphing in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle with times of 21.81 and 47.87 seconds. In the 100 yard butterfly, Gill posted a winning time of 52.37 seconds for the Camels.

Junior Tim Walsh (Lincoln Park, N.J.) took the 100 and 200 yard back with times of 52.32 seconds and 1:54.13.

Joe Gibson (Northwood, N.H.) posted a winning time of 10:13.20 in the 1,000 yard free.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Camel foursome comprised of Walsh, Kyle Matson (Brookfield, Conn.), Albert Perley (Charlotte, N.C.) and Austin Meszaros (Caldwell, N.J.) triumphed in 1:28.72.

Murphy paved the way to another victory for the women, triumphing in the 100, 200 and 500 yard free with respective times of 53.35 seconds, 1:56.56 and 5:14.33. Junior Lauren Pappas (Stratford, Conn.) recorded a victory in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:58.75. Jessica Schanzer (Monterey, Calif.) posted a winning time of 1:01 in the 100 yard back.

Ellie Huelbig (Rutherford, N.J.) won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:11.55 and Erika Fernandes triumphed with a time of 24.70 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Schanzer, Julia Pielock (Deerfield, Mass.), Abbey Ridge (Yarmouth, Maine) and MacKenzie Lilly (Frederick, Md.) teamed up for a win in 1:41.67
