Coast Guard defeats Merchant Marine rivals in tennis

The Coast Guard Academy kept the Superintendent's Tropy out of the Merchant Marine's hands on Sunday after a sweeping win on the tennis court. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Coast Guard won all nine matches to beat rival Merchant Marine 9-0 and secure the Superintendents' Trophy given to the academy which wins the most sporting events during the academic year.

Coast Guard, which has never lost the Superintendents' Trophy tied last season with Merchant Marine for the first time. The Bears clinched the win as they now lead 7-4 with just two events left this year.

The Bears not drop a set in disposing of the Mariners to improve to 7-3 on the season.

The best Mariners singles showing was from freshman Rich Hine who took Bears sophomore Joe Sullivan-Springhetti to a second set tie-breaker after dropping the first set 6-1.

Sophomore Erik Oredson, playing his first varsity singles match for the Bears won at #6. Oredson and Sullivan-Springhetti remain unbeaten in singles and doubles.

Junior Greg Mitchell won at #1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, freshman Josh Fischer won at #2 singles, 6-0, 6-0 while both also won in doubles action.

The Bears next match is at regionally-ranked NYU Wednesday. The match will be played at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
