Beacons Net Lacrosse Win Against Mariners

UMass Boston defeats Mitchell 13-4

The University of Massachusetts in Boston swooped past Mitchell College on Monday, racking up a 13-4 win over the Mariners. The following information was provided by Dan Campagna, interim director of athletics communications at UMass Boston:

Led by junior midfielder Pat Driscoll’s (Hingham, MA) four goals, the University of Massachusetts Boston lacrosse team rattled off nine unanswered tallies while holding Mitchell College scoreless in the second half on the way to a 13–4 victory Monday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. With the decision, the Beacons improve to 4-6 overall while the Mariners fall to 6-3.

UMass Boston held a 4-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes of action. Freshman attackman Dean Driscoll (Cohasset, MA) netted the first strike for the Beacons at 10:57, but Mitchell knotted the contest, 1-1, two minutes later when junior attackman Adam Grillo (Waterford, CT) finished a pass from freshman midfielder Erik Vasquez (Oceanside, CA). UMass Boston followed up with three unassisted markers, one each from freshman midfielder Grady Wick (Newton, MA), junior midfielder Rob Uhrig (Boston, MA) and P. Driscoll to open a 4-1 lead.

The Mariners tallied a goal late in the first period as Vasquez found the net and then they quickly notched a pair of markers to open the first 1:12 of the second to tie the contest, 4-4. Grillo set up freshman attackman Shane Sullivan (Quaker Hill, CT) just 40 seconds into the frame, and then Grillo followed up with his second goal 32 seconds later. With all the momentum seemingly on Mitchell’s side, P. Driscoll stepped up to bury a pair of unassisted strikes over the next 3:38 to give the Beacons some breathing room and spurred what became a 9-0 run. Wick added his second of the game with 5:22 to play to give UMass Boston a 7-4 lead going into halftime.

The Beacons tacked on six more scores over the final 30 minutes while shutting out the Mariners. In the third, freshman attackman Tommy Petitti (Quincy, MA) found D. Driscoll for a marker and then D. Driscoll setup junior midfielder Ryan FitzGerald (Abington, MA) to make it 9-4. Wick, Uhrig and freshman attackman John Perro (Northbridge, MA) tacked on unassisted goals in the fourth period, and finally Uhrig setup P. Driscoll with 5:18 to play to cap the scoring.
