Baseball, Tennis Wins For The Coast Guard

Bears defeat Mitchell College, Clark University

The won the final game of the baseball season against on Wednesday, while the Bears also defeated Clark University in men's tennis. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Baseball: Coast Guard 17, Mitchell 5

Coast Guard batted around in both the second and third innings and jumped out to a 9-1 lead and beat Mitchell 17-5 in the Bears final game of the season at Dodd Stadium.

Senior Eddie Kalankiewicz and freshman Blake Thompson each had three hits as 12 different Coast Guard players hit safely in the 19 hit attack. Kalankiewicz, who finishes his career with 99 career hits, had a double, scored four runs and also stole three bases in the win while Thompson had a double and drove in three runs as Coast Guard finished the season 14-21. Mitchell dropped to 7-17 on the season.

Kalankiewicz had a hit in each of his first three at bats to bring his career total to 99, but walked and grounded out twice, just getting nipped at first base in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior Nick Peters (1-0), making his first career start, got his first career win as he was the designated pitcher of record before the game and worked three innings allowing just one hit and an earned run. He was the first of seven Coast Guard pitchers in the game.
Sophomore Travis Gembecki (0-3) took the loss for Mitchell, he started and went 2 2/3 and was charged with nine runs, eight earned.

Junior Nolan Gallagher had two hits including a double and two RBI’s while classmates Cameron Carroll and Tyler Babkiewich each had a two hits including a double and an RBI for the Bears.

Seniors Mike Salerno and Chris Izurieta playing in the final games of their career each hit safely with Izurieta driving in a run and Salerno adding and RBI.

It was a great day for the Coast Guard seniors a senior pitcher Chris Martin got the first at-bat of his career as a pinch hitter in the ninth and he laced a single to left and came around and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Dave Wolinski to close the scoring.

Freshman Drew Doyle had two hit and a pair of RBI’s for Mitchell.

Men's Tennis: Coast Guard 8, Clark 1

Coast Guard won five of the six singles matches and swept the doubles matches to beat Clark 8-1 in the final New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match of the season.

The Bears clinched the second seed in this weekend’s NEWMAC tournament improving to 11-6 overall and finishing 4-1 in conference play. Clark is 15-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference finishing third. The Bears and Cougars will meet once again on Saturday in the NEWMAC tournament semifinals at 3 p.m. at MIT.

Josh Fischer won 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 at #2 singles, Nick Martin won 6-1, 6-2 at #3, Blake Maurer was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at # 4 singles while Matt Faha won 6-1, 2-6, 12-10 at #5 and Jon Lightner was a 5-7, 6-2, 10-4 winner at #6 singles for the Bears.

and Mitchell won 8-4 at # 1 doubles, Fischer and Maurer were a 8-1 winner at #2 doubles while Faha and Andrew Bryson won 8-6 at #3 doubles for Coast Guard.
