“The ELITE Program at Science and Tech will better enable students to integrate the engineering world into the marine and environmental world through hands-on research of environments already at their doorstep here in New London,” STMHS science teacher Chuck Mulligan said. “It will also give students a chance to instill in the younger scientists of the community the same awareness that they are gaining through their research.

Through the program’s planned objectives, students will refine their scientific writing skills and gain a deeper appreciation for the role of modern technologies in science and mathematics. As a result of their learning, students will also present the findings of this program to local, state and national audiences at workshops, conferences and teacher trainings.

Emphasis in the ELITE Program will be placed on digitally based literacy strategies that will enhance lab work, student drive and have an overall deeper meaning for students. This work is the precursor for the labs and fieldwork and will be the vessel for the program’s workshops, Mulligan said.

Grant funding from Toshiba America Foundation will provide tool kits, production systems, and transportation to and from workshops for the students in the ELITE Program.
