New London Public Schools will be closed today following unexpected power outages in some of the school buildings.
The decision reverses one made on Wednesday evening by the district to open all schools except Winthrop School today. Winthrop School was used as an emergency shelter during Hurricane Sandy but was evacuated during the storm due to generator problems.
According to Mayor Daryl Finizio's Facebook page, Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School and New London High School remained without power.
As of this morning, about 241,000 Connecticut Light & Power residents remained without power. The outages included 5,257 in New London, or 38 percent of the city's customers.
