Mitchell College Students To Participate In Community Service Across New London

Students will take part in "The Big Event" on Wednesday

Students from Mitchell College will arrive at locations across New London on Wednesday to participate in a nationwide day of community service.

The college's United Way Committee organized its first participation in "The Big Event." Several colleges across the nation have set dates in April to have student volunteers participate in community service projects.

Students will be treated to a barbecue at the dining hall at noon before going to seven project sites. They will work on the following projects for the afternoon:

  • B.P. Learned Mission: prepration of raised garden beds
  • Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center: sorting of food
  • Mitchell Beach: general clean-up
  • Mitchell Woods: general clean-up of woods and Little League fields
  • OIC of New London County: clean-up and organization of the culinary arts training area
  • Safe Futures: steam cleaning of furniture and carpeting, clean-up of hallways and stairwells, mopping and general cleaning for the Transitional Living Program
  • United Cerebal Palsy of Eastern Connecticut in Quaker Hill: yard work and clean-up

“Mitchell students prepare every day to make a positive impact in their world, not just after graduation, but right now in our local community," said Mitchell College President Mary Ellen Jukoski. "The Big Event acts as a lightning rod for the spirit that makes our community great.”
