A Press Release From Mitchell College

On its 75th Anniversary Founder's Day, Mitchell College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Veteran Study Lounge, a space in the Duquès Center dedicated for students who are service members and veterans.

Retired U.S. Army Colonel and former U.S. Congressman Rob Simmons joined Mitchell College President Mary Ellen Jukoski, Ed.D., faculty, staff, students, and representatives from Home Depot for a moving ceremony to officially open the Mitchell College Veteran Study Lounge on September 18, 2013.

Transitioning from active duty to the classroom often leaves veterans without the familiar camaraderie to which they have grown accustomed. A dependable and supportive environment is essential to the success veterans achieved during their military careers. Congressman Simmons spoke about his own experience as a Vietnam veteran and the importance of finding community support in higher education.

As President Jukoski explains, "The Veteran Study Lounge is a resource where veterans and service members will meet, study, and relax. It offers a place where trust, support, and 'brother/sisterhood' can be found and fostered in an academic environment."

The Veteran Study Lounge is part of a proud tradition at Mitchell College of meeting the needs of our service members and veterans that stretches all the way back to World War II, during which Mitchell College facilities supported the U.S. Army and Coast Guard and after which began a special summer session for veterans in June 1946.

The tradition continues as this month it was announced that Mitchell College has once again been recognized as a Military Friendly School©. Military Friendly Schools are the top 15 percent of schools nationwide that deliver the best experience for military students.

The Veteran Study Lounge has also been made possible by support from The Home Depot and Bob's Discount Furniture.
