Janet Napolitano To Appear At Coast Guard Academy Commencement

Secretary of Homeland Security will give commencement at cadets' commencement on May 16

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will deliver this year's keynote address at the commencement.

The academy announced that Napolitano will be the speaker at the 11 a.m. ceremony on May 16, which will take place at Cadet Memorial Field and be open by attendance only.

"We’re looking forward to hosting the secretary who has been an avid supporter of the academy,” said academy Superintendent Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz in a statement. “Our commencement exercises are wonderful opportunities to showcase New London to the rest of the nation and let everyone know how proud we are of our academy and cadets.”

Napolitano served as a U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona starting in 1993 and was elected the state's attorney general in 1998. She was elected governor of Arizona in 2002 and served until January of 2009, when she accepted President Barack Obama's appointment to Secretary of Homeland Security.

Napolitano was the commencement speaker in 2009, and attended commencement last year when . Napolitano also sailed aboard the barque Eagle when the tall ship entered New York Harbor during .
