Helping New London Students Prepare For College

Science and Technology Magnet School grads return to tell students everything they always wanted to know about college but were afraid to ask.

Fifteen alumni from the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut are back at their Alma Mater today to share things they wish they would have known about college when they were in high school.

Their visit is an effort to help the magnet school’s seniors feel a bit more comfortable about what college life has in store for them. This is the first College Knowledge Day organized by the school, and it aims to put graduating students' concerns at ease.

Today’s returning alumni have either graduated from college and are working in professional fields, recently entered college, or are student athletes learning the delicate balance between academics and college life. Alumni have are attending or have attended Southern Connecticut State University, University of Rhode Island, Springfield College, Tuskegee University and the University of Connecticut.

One of the day's highlights is a roundtable discussion between STMHS students and alumni about college expectations, application and financial stressors to how to handle life on campus, which could cover everything from peer pressure situations to dealing with difficult roommates.

“STMHS is a family and that is why so many of our students continue to come back to visit us and give back to our school when we need them,” guidance staff member Michelle Mercado said. “I am very excited.”
