Mitchell College to Host Sailing Great, Halsey Herreshoff on July 9

On Saturday, July 9, one of America’s outstanding sailors, Halsey Herreshoff, will share his knowledge of the seas and personal insight of America’s Cup races in the keynote address to Mitchell College alumni, faculty, staff and friends at Reunion Weekend 2011.

This is the first year that the College’s alumni weekend will take place during Sailfest. Typically scheduled in fall, reunion weekend highlights also include: walking tours, sailing with the current Mitchell College sailing team, alumni games and Sailfest fireworks from Mitchell Beach.

Herreshoff’s presentation, Technology, Yachts & People, will be held from 4 – 6 pm in the College’s Weller Center and is open to the public.  A wine and cheese reception will follow the presentation. The College is offering event admission by donation; visitors are asked to give-what-they-can. Proceeds support Mitchell College students and programs.

Both sailors and non-sailors will enjoy this extraordinary view of the world of yachting. In addition to Herreshoff’s first hand sailing experience, guests will also explore how the 160 year old race has helped catapult technology within the sport, and have the rare opportunity to view early films of the America’s Cup captured by Thomas Edison in the late 19th century.

A Naval Architect and veteran of four America’s Cup matches and many open ocean races, Herreshoff continues the historic family history in the sport of sailing. He edited the classic book The Sailor's Handbook and serves on the Board of Directors of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and the America's Cup Hall of Fame in Bristol, RI.

This is the first time in almost 30 years that Mitchell College Reunion Weekend will take place in conjunction with Sailfest, a departure from its longstanding placement in fall.
“We are so pleased to create this opportunity for alumni to return to campus, reminisce and experience one of New London’s most spectacular annual events with old friends on the shores of Mitchell Beach,” says Kevin Mayne, Senior Vice President of Mitchell College.
