Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund Recognizes Coast Guard Academy

New systems estimated to result in millions of dollars in savings

The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund has recognized the Coast Guard Academy for energy saving initiatives. The academy recently took part in the Energy Efficiency Fund’s Energy Opportunities program, which provided incentives for the installation of an updated energy management system and lighting systems.

The renovations occurred in several buildings on the campus, including dormitories, classrooms and offices. Representatives of the Energy Efficiency Fund and Connecticut Light and Power presented Capt. James E. Rendon, assistant superintendent of the academy, with a plaque in honor of the achievement.

“The energy efficiency projects completed at the United States Coast Guard Academy are wonderful examples of how the Energy Efficiency Fund is making a difference in Connecticut,” said Rich Steeves, chairman of the Energy Efficiency Fund. “With the state challenged by a difficult economy, having a resource that enables our institutions to reduce their operating costs is more important than ever.”

“Working with the energy experts on these projects was not only economically beneficial for the short and long term, but it also improved the quality of lighting and heating throughout the campus,” said Rendon. “Furthermore, we are very pleased that the energy savings have a real, positive environmental impact on Connecticut and the region."

“CL&P encourages their customers to consider comprehensive projects,” said Jessica Brahaney Cain, director of CL&P’s customer relations and strategy department. “The Coast Guard Academy’s energy efficiency upgrades were made to multiple systems such as lighting, heating and cooling. By taking a broader approach, they were able to maximize the available incentives along with the energy savings.”

The energy-efficient lighting is estimated to provide $146,000 in annual savings and about $1.8 million in total savings over the system's lifespan. The energy management system controls the temperature of a room based on factors such as the season and number of occupants. It is estimated to provide $53,000 in savings each year and $500,000 in savings over its lifespan.

The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund sponsors conservation programs to improve the efficiency of electric and natural gas systems. The programs are funded by a charge on customers’ utility bills and administered by the state’s electric and gas utilities, such as The Connecticut Light and Power Company, The United Illuminating Company, Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation, Southern Connecticut Gas Company and Yankee Gas Services Company.
