Coast Guard Academy Christens New Sailboats On Friday

Training vessels involved in Leadership 44 training program to be launched

The Coast Guard Foundation and Alumni Association will christen two training sailboats on Friday in an invitation-only event.

The vessels are number three and four in the academy’s fleet of eight new sailboats, which were built by Morris Yachts to replace four 40-year-old boats. The sailboats are used in the Leadership 44 program in which cadets work in varying stations on 12-day sails. The first two boats were .

The sailboats will be christened and launched by representatives from the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1958 and the Coast Guard Foundation, a Stonington-based nonprofit organization providing support for Coast Guard personnel and their families. Capt. Bryan Finch will give the blessing, while Superintendent Sandra Stosz and Capt. John Maxham will deliver remarks.

The third sailboat has been dubbed Stormy Petrel and is sponsored by the academy’s Class of 1958. The fourth boat is named Blue Goose and is sponsored by the Coast Guard Foundation.
