Fill The Spot: 931 Bank Street

Former Blockbuster store in New London is now vacant

Movie rental stores have been having a rough time since the advent of mail-in and online streaming rental services, and the Blockbuster in New London was no exception. The store was still around when I moved to New London in 2010, about a month after the chain filed for bankruptcy, but disappeared soon after.

The blue awning is gone, the interior is stripped down, and the movie posters have been removed from the windows. The one hint that this used to be a video rental place is the "Quik Drop" return slot.

The property is listed by Pequot Commercial, which says the space measures about 7,000 square feet and can be divided into three areas of 1,250 square feet, 2,600 square feet, and 3,170 square feet if need be. The company suggests that the site, on one end of Bank Street close to the Waterford border, is good for a medical clinic but also notes a number of other possibilities including a recording studio, dry cleaning, office, or retail space.
