Fill The Spot: 7 Union Street

Former Citywide Baptist Church location is up for sale

The elegant doorway at 7 Union Street still bears a sign for the Citywide Baptist Church, although this congregation has long since moved on from the site. The church is now located on Broad Street, and during a visit there for my monthly church column members told me that the second-floor arrangement just wasn't conducive to people who had difficulties negotiating the stairs.

The church isn't the first one to try out the space, however. Also known as the Union Lodge, the building once held the New London Spiritualist Temple. References to this church in listings of services show up between 1980 and 1987.

The building is up for sale by Baratz Realty, which is located nearby at 13 Union Street. It has been hurting for tenants, as the hair salon Fran's Place joined Citywide Baptist Church in departing for another location. A few doors down, however, you can find the Pigeon Hole Gallery/Studios and a band's practice space. The address is in a mixed residential and commercial area, not far from AT&T, McCue Mortgage, and Farrar Sails.
