Fill The Spot: 181 Bank Street

A drugstore, a restaurant, an antiques store, a hair salon...what's next for this location?

The food strolls of New London Main Street in the spring and fall have typically offered a way for new businesses to let a large number of people know about their place at once. That was how I first found out about Rose's Final Touch, a salon and spa that opened at 181 Bank Street in 2011.

The business was updating its Facebook page as late as March 20, but the interior is now empty and the lettering has been removed from over the door. A chalkboard on one end of the building's deck retains some of the offerings for the first year anniversary.

The building is one of the more historic ones in New London. A plaque for the Historic Waterfront District Heritage Trail indicates that it was built for lumberyard owner Jonathan Starr and that it later housed a drugstore for 80 years. Before the salon, the building was home to Timothy's restaurant and Starr of New London Antiques.
