What are the ODDS?

Do you believe in coincidence? I do not! As I viewed the Schooner Fest this past weekend I was in awe. I felt the same way when perched atop the fort at Ft. Trumbull for Op Sail 2012. The parade of tall ships was a sight to see, I waited with my family for the other 15 tall ships to come up the river but they never came. This scene played out again this past weekend as the half a dozen schooners came to New London, I waited again with my family for the 14 other schooners to arrive, but they never came.

Reflecting on this my wife and daughters uttered “what a strange coincidence”, I snapped “this is not a coincidence”.

Looking a bit closer one can see that the Schooner Fest and the Op Sail 2012 are events run by the same group of people. This is not a partisan group of players. John Johnson an active republican in New London along with Kevin Cavanaugh and Mike Passero 2 active democrats in New London are among the most vocal and active promoters of Schooner Fest and the Op Sail 2012. What are the ODDS that both events by this group can have virtually the same rate of no show vessels for their maritime events?

When pondering the evidence it points to plain exaggeration by the organizers in an effort to promote a much grander event than would actually occur. The benefits of such an exaggeration are increased monetary contributions from the State of Connecticut and from corporate sponsors.

When will the State and the corporate sponsors catch on to the ploys of exaggeration by the people that are organizing these events?

If we cannot trust these people to be honest when promoting an event for the community can they be trusted at all. At least one of the people involved is an elected official in New London and it appears that his lack of candor and honesty in the promoting of maritime events plays out in his political life as well.
